COMPANY DEPARTMENT Wood deliver material BOOSTERS III PBIDUIOII aii o si m i A strange reluctance towards sub-t scribing money with which to carry on a publicity campaign marked the meeting held at the court house last evening and from a standpoint of Im mediate results the meeting was de clared a failure by Tom Richardson, says the Pendleton East Oregonlan. Though the representative business men and property owners ot the city were present, but a half dozen or so were willing to help finance a pub licity bureau. 'Of these one waa a banker, while the others were mer chants. From those who own build ings and other property about the city from which they receive high rents. not a cent could be secured for the development of the city and county. At the opening of the meeting Tom Richardson was introduced by Presi dent Alexander of the Commercial as sociation, who expressed gratification that the audience was composed of 4 representatives from all portions of the county. r, r j- .j l, "-- ,: . ? iV,- I Va1 -DnklLnl, ' In a - very Interesting halt Hour talk Mr. Richardson explained the nature of the work being done by the Portland Commercial club. He also (old of the development work at New Orleans, Where he was located before coming: tp Oregon, and of the move ments, that are now on at Eugene, Medford, Ashland, La Grande and other places throughout the state. He argued that Pendleton and the other Important towns of the state should '.maintain a publicity bureau. To 'd this: h declared would require motley and popular subscription of fered the 'only means of securing t same, ' SAO DEATH OCCURS AT, LOSTIHE SUNDAY EVENING The body of Miss Frances Wymer. His many friends In Union county Join with The Observer In of fering congratulations. For a time It was feared that he would never re cover. Turning to the Immediate work of raising funds he asked for offers of $25 per month towards a publicity bureau. Matlock Rmponds Not. "Mr. Matlock." said he. addressing W. F. Matlock, who was In the audi ence, "won't you start this list with a 125 per month subscription?" But Mr. Matlock replied not, and for a time It looked as though there was no one to start the ball rolling. Finally M. B. Gwlnn volunteered 125 per month In behalf of the Pendleton Savings bank and the crowd qheered. After trying In vain to secure more $25 offers the limit was reduced to $15 and finally to $10 per month.' At the tatter rat R. Alexander, the Peo ple Warehouse, Koeppen Bros., R. H. Wilcox and E. J. Murphy all sub scriDea. But no other offers wer forthcoming and the effort was given up In disgust. . Richardson Was Disappointed. . "Fellow cltlsens, this Is the first :n-.c :'i?yi fctn as this has' happened In Oregon since I have been here," said Tom Richardson, when he saw that his appeal had been In vain. This movement so far has been a failure. It Is not for me to say what you people Bhall give' and I can only leave It to you." ; i j Later on In . the evening James Johns roused the Ire ot the visitor by saying that Portland seemed to look upon eastern Oregon solely as a land of- sagebrush and jackrabblts.
