Goethe. . i : President Campbell, of the State university, who Is touring the state while remarking what wonderful things Eugene was . accomplishing through Its booster organization, stat ed that the little4 city of Springfield, a few miles distant from Eugene, was now boasting of the most equable cli mate on the coast, ascribing the change due to the fact that Eugene waa emitting so much "hot air" that by the time it reached Springfield the temperature was simply Ideal. Eu gene, however, is building five-story buildings, and block after block of paved streets, expending $300,000 for an Improved water system, and no less than CO new residences are now under construction. She has reason to feel proud of her growth. Any communi ty that will raise a booster fund of 112,000 for advertising their country can be depended upon to secure re sults. Does advertising pay? Look at Eugene today. There Is not a city anywhere that contains more loyal and energetic boosters than La Grande. All we lack Is a little organization, a getting to gether and the Joining hands and pur poses In a common direction. Let us all turn out tonight in the organiza tion of the new Commercial club. It takes a little time to get down to act ive work. By commencing now we could be In most excellent shape to take care of the fall rush of home seekers. We could prepare for a most excellent exhibit and our conditions are much more favorable for a cam paign than for a spring campaign. During the fall Orande Ronde valley, j with her waving fields of golden grain, her hundreds of acres of red apples, and the beet culture on, shows activity that appeals to the thrifty easterner. i , -e .. Every one should plant liberally of flowers this spring and fall. It may be that another campaign will be in augurated this fall when the home' seekers rates are on, (0 days. We all remember how the flowers were an predated last fall during the booster campaign. The results of that little campaign can point today to a num ber of families that weer secured by the maintenance of exhibit, hall. Yes, that campaign did far more than that. , It got the towns of Grande Ttonde val ley together as they had not been for Tears. That was worth the effort ex pended many times over. There will be something doing In La Grands every Saturday for the next live months. A parade of the La Grande fire department would be an attractive feature Our fire fighters re second to none nnd we have Just reason to be proud of our fire boys. We have had a number of excellent opportunities during the past t few years to have disastrous conflagra--Aions, but In no single instance did the boys tfter lht a fire gat beyond con . trol. CONFIRMATION SERVICE. Bishop Paddock Delivers Stirring Re portAddress Last Evening. A good congregation which nearly filled all the pews, assembled last eve ning in St. Peter's Episcopal church, to. hear Bishop Paddock, and witness the solemn confirmation service. The bishop's address took the form of a report of his experiences during the past few weeks. Besides Baker City La Grande, Pendleton, he has visited The Dalles, Hood River, Heppner, Weston, Union and Cove. At all of these places he met with a cordial re ception and found much encourage ment. But It was pathetic to find how the church was misunderstood and the prejudice existing against her owing to the Ignorance as to what she Is and -what she stands for. He spoke briefly on what the church has to of fer and furnish society In the preach ing of the gospel and administration of the sacraments. In this connection he emphasized the point that confir mation was a lay ordination, which conferred on the recipients power from on high to go . out and save others and by so doing, save them selves, the principle underlying It and Its purpose both being unselfish ones. A class of six adults was presented by the rector to the bishop to receive this apostolic rite of laying of hands. SUMMONS. In the Circuit Court of the State of Oron for Union County.
