, . , As will be. noticed In a news Item
' elsewhere In this issue. It would be an
, easy matter to secure a mllltla com
rrnnv In this city. As lunar as we as
a nation do not keep any larger stand
4ng army than has been our policy in
the past, we must depend in every
great crisis on our volunteers and the
mllltla is capable of supplying the na
tion with a large body of active young
men who have, to a greater or less ex
tent, military training. This Is the
real object, but there Is also a social
feature that has advantages, all of
which goes to make city life. La
Grande had a splendid mllltla com
pany for many years, and should have
one now.
e '
Every business man In the city
jhould say a good word for Market
day next Saturday. . These day
should become fixed periods not less
than once every month, and the peo
ple would look forward to them,
knowing that on these fixed days La
Grande would hold a Market day.
see
There Is considerable Interest being
taken by the owners of fine stallions
in the valley on Horse show day In
La Grande next Saturday. There Is
every indication that there will be i
fine number of horses on exhibition.

MONSTER GRAY WOLF KILLED.
Wyoming Mun Was Viciously Attack
ed by the AnlnutL
A dispatch from Braggs, V.'yo., says
of the killing of a monster gray wolf
there:
While engaged In looking after his
raps which he had set In the hopes
of capturing some coyotes, Edward
Yoakum was attacked by an enormous
gray wolf, which broke the Iron c'mln
of a trap and made a desperate at
tempt to reach the throat of its cay
tor. Yoakum, however, made a hasty re
treat and avoided Injury. As the huce
animal stilt showed fight, Yoakum
secured a large club and finally suc
ceeded In braining the monster.
The beast was a timber wolf pre
sumably of considerable age, as Its
hide is 'rather larger thun common.
Its body was larger than that of a
mountain lion and was covered with
fat, pointing to the fact that the ani
mal had led a life of an epicurean on
the cuttle and sheep on the large
Snake and Bear river ranges.
This la the second wolf killed in this
locality In the last six weeks.
