Interest In commu nity publicity reached a climax In Portland last week when the 80 prizes offered by the Portland Commercial club for articles on the Pacific north west, printed in papers outside of Oregon' and Washington, were award ed and the money distributed the same day. The judges were Messrs. James F. Ewlng of Portland academy, J. F. Tyler, new editor of the Oregon Journal, and W. J. Cuddy, editor of the Weekly Oregonlan, and they have spent two and one-half month read ing the more than 1,000,000 words submitted by various contestants. Rev. John Rroach Straton,. pastor of the Seventh Baptist church of Baltimore, Md was winner of the grand prize of $1000. He was In Portland last sum mer for a short visit Miss Matee) Howe of Portland, was awarded the second prize of IS0O.' Articles were In competition from every state In union, and almost every state had its representative among the winners. . Charles 8. Fee, passenger traffic manager of the Harrlman lines, spent three full days in Portland last week In consultation with General Passen ger Agent William McMurray and other officials, arranging the details of a 28-hour service between Port land and San Francisco. When Senator George C. Perkins of California, In a speech recently deliv ered before the United States senate, made the statement that Portland harbor afforded a depth of between 19 and 20 feet, the people of the great Columbia River basin and all those of the Pacific northwest were aston ished. The most thorough compilation of the shipping of 1907 from this port shows numerous vessels with drrift rnnglng from 25 to 25.9 feet, and n very large number averaging In e--eess of 24 feet. The people of the Co lumbia River bnsln do not appreciate the misrepresentation constantly glvn the river, and have asked Senator Per kins to correct his erroneous sta'e. ment In the senate, but up to this time he has not done so. Mayor Heltfeld, of Lewlston, cam" to Portland on the 10th at the head f a delegation of Lewlston-ClarksMn citizens. Including officials of thi commercial bodies, the managers ft their numerous Irrigation project. railroad officials and capitalists t" personally invite representative cl'i- zens of, Portland to visit Lewtstnn- Clarkston on May 1 to celebrate t'-r opening of the "Rlparla cut-of'V which means a 10-hour schedule be tween those cities and Portland. "Were It not for the fact that r-- i i evocation makes It necessary for r" j reside In the national capital," erf F. J. Haskln, the famous foreign cr.r- respondent, representing some 40 r' the leading metropolitan papers of f ho country, "I would choose the re- I "Iflc northwest for my home. In n" ertlon of the world Is the reward of endeavor so sure, and life so whc!r tome and delightful. I have encoun tered the most delightful weather 1 Portland thnt I have seen during trip of more than 20,000 miles since January 1." Oregon Horses for Kentucky. E. B. Eblln of Kentucky Is now in Grant county trying to buy 8000 hend of range horses for shipment to east ern markets, but so far has been una ble to make any extensive purchases. He has bought 1000 head of aged horses from W. W. Ilrown of Paulina. Crook county, but he has been unable to make any further purchases on ac count of the low prices offered. He has been on a deal for 4000 head of horses In the Ixee district In Grant county, but the owners are holding for good prices and he will have to pay more than he offers If he gets them. ' Mr. Eblln say that the demand for horses In the eastern and southern states Is unprecedented and he will ship out every hoof he ran buy In t'no northwent. He also says that the class of horses raised In Oregon has been greatly Improved In the past few years and that It Is now possible to find as good drivers, saddlers, roadsters and draft horses on the ranges of Oregon as anywhere In the world, while a few years ago the grade had been al lowed to run down considerably.
