PLEA FOR APPROPRIATION., Communication to Albany Democrat hvm Forth Conditions. To the Editor: What la the matter with aome of the people of our beloved atate -of Oregon? Why do they fight against their own Interests T la It a fact that our citizens do not believe in educa tion higher education? And can a state Institution exist without reason able support from the state? I am not opposed to denominational schools. I believe In them. I am not opposed to the State Agricultural col lege. We need that too. In fact, we need a'.l our schools. But we cannot do without a university, a place where girls and boys with limited meana can get an education that will prepare them for good positions. Examine It ; ou will the papers that contain the positions that are filled by the class of 1907. Now, there are boys, bright Intelligent boys, who ' are working their way through college, doing any kind of legitimate work they can Pi, 4 Borne writer aatd, through the Ore gonlan, that the professors of the uni versity were a set of ungodly men. That la not true. The teachers are, from the president down to the assist ants, members of our leading church es, with a few exception, and not only members but better and more eff 1- Hont men and women I never knew anywhere. The school does not claim to be a religious Institution, and yet they are laying the foundation for a betterment of. men and women. A prominent business man told ma a few days ago that the saloon element were going to vote against the appro priation because the professors work ed so hard in Eugene tor closing the saloons. And now why are some taxpayers making so much noise about the ap proprlation? Just go to work and figure out how much more our taxes will be on account of raising this I Wood D Coal: ! Why Pay More? Lest you do not under stand the advantages of the state uni versity, I will gfve my experience In this matter. Almost eight years ago I was left with a little money and one child to educate. I lived In Al bany. I love the place, for better people can be .found no "place on earth, and It was In that place that I apent the happiest days of my life and yet, after I lost everything but my little girl and a few hundred dollars, I knew that, although If Ood spared my health I could make a living, yet It would be impossible to educate my child. So I decided to come to Eu gene, and here with the opportunities that a state Institution affords, I have given my daughter an education that has enabled her to secure a lucrative position, and has prepared her aa a university graduated get a situation In almost any business. . KATE CUNDIFF. Communication. Mr. Editor: I notice advertised ex tensively In Portland papers and else where, the announcement that In La Grande Baturday, April 18, there will be an unholy and spectacular show, via.: that of a couple being publicly married at the horse show. It Is to be sincerely hoped It Is a false state ment and that no silly persons can be found who will prostitute the holy manner. La Grande Is not In need of such advertising. Surely no minister could be found who would so disgrace his holy and exalted office as to play a second fid dle side-show such as that Nor would I think any self-respecting Jus tice of the peace could be found to do It.
