In 35 there was not a prisoner In the county Jail and In 87 (over I B of the counties of the state) she did not have a man, woman or child charged on ine criminal docket with any crime. Such a record cannot be du plicated by any license state in the union. Exchange. . e For several years, St. Johns, prac tlcally a suburb of Portland, has been the center of one of the most bitter and constant fights against an open town and Sunday closing. Tues day's election resulted in a victory for the good government ticket, at which time also, city dock bonds to the amount of $60,000 were voted. Eira Meeker, the enthusiastic pio neer, who retraced the old Oregon trail with his ox team last summer, has aecured the support of congress men Jones and Humphrey, In an at tempt to aecure an appropriation of 150,000 for monument to be erected long the route. It Is to be hoped that the govern ment may bo successful In keeping that notorious anarchist, Emma Gold man, out of this country, now 'that aha Is beyond our boundaries. This is certainly hard luck, however, on Canada, where she Is now agitating. Senator Ankeny certainly did ' his candidacy no Injury this week when tie secured the passage through the senate of a bill appropriating $2S0,O00 for a fe'deral building to be erected in Walla Walla. Oregon Is rapidly regaining her far mer prosperity. Respectfully, H. E. COdLIDGE. as opposing It But at the April pri- si4i444444-4444S44S mary, either Mr. Fulton or Mr. fake must step aside. We have studied the situation carefully and draw the fol lowing conclusions: 1. Should Mr. Cake receive the re publican nomination. It will place Mr. Chamberlain "between the devil and the deep sea" without a platform to stand on, he having voluntarily as sumed a non-partisan, happy-go-lucky gait, g:lr. the 'w'''u hog on statement No. 1. and toiling his dem ocratic brethren )' recently loved so well, that he ties become Infatuated "with most of the It'joscvtit policies" until after the June election after which time the probationary state will cease and te again permitted to exorcise his conscience by voting for democratic measures In the senate, if elected. 2. That as Mr. Cake has firmly stood for, and manfully' defended statement No. 1 for the pest two years there would be no Just cause for re publicans to prefer a new convert from 'the'' democratic ' ranks on this question to the exclusion of all other questions of vital 'Importance to the state and nation which will como up during the senatorial tci'm. 3. That In the llaht of p.ist history, vl.l, li.to!.:!atlv? hH-f-Vfornint use of mony to "Influence" senators and representatives, men seeking election to the legislature on senatorial years to see the fun; special train running with all other corrupting Influences In connection therewith, thus bringing shame and disgrace on the fair name or our state, our people will never again return to the old system of election by the legislature. 4. That a very largo majority of the newspapers In the state are first, last and all the time In favor of the people electing a senator. 6. That nearly every grange In the state has declared by resolution that they will not support candidates for the legislature who are opposed to election by the people. 6. That It Is a republican measure passed by a republican legislature. 7. Nearly every candidate that has announced for the legislature has subscribed to statement No. 1 at least In modified form, and those who failed had to come back and take their medicine. 8. With 30,000 republican majority behind Mr. Cake, would It be possible for Mr. Chamberlain to Jump sideways into the United States senate by us ing a little soft soap on weak-kneed j republicans? We think not. 9. Should Mr. Fulton be nominat ed, the conditions would be entirely reversed, thus placing Fulton on the defensive Instead of Chamberlain, which would at least greatly reduce the republican majority. In view of these facts as we see them, we must say that to our minds, the safest, surest and best thing for republicans to do Is to vote for Mr. Cake for United States senator. Cor- vallls Gazette. The candidacy of Oovernor Chamber, lain on the Cuke, platform, adds new complications to the situation. Toronto, Ont., April 8. An ix-! haustive Investigation of the mode oft life of the Doubhobors, the Russian religious fanatics who have settled In Canada, has been undertaken and some sensational developments are ex pected. It Is alleged that the mem bers of the various Doukhobor colo nies practice free love, dozens of men and women living together In the same room, and that young girls are forced at tender age to adopt the commun istic Ideal of marriage. It Is stated thut very few parents attempt to care for their own children, but turn them over to the community to be provided for from the common fund. Some of the Doukhobors refuse to bury their dead, believing that the soul of the deceased would be unable to escape from the grave. Corpses are taken to secluded spots and left to serve as food for the wolves. Physicians are not allowed to treat their sick, the leaders declaring that Jesus is with them all the time and that no human power could serve to overt the fate of one who is "called." ' At Fort William, Ont., the mem bers of an Investigating committee visited a Doukhobor dwelling, which. In their opinion, was large enough for possibly 18 people at the most, but there they found 76 men,, women and children, ranging in age from IB to 60 years, lying about the small rooms, nude and uncovered, without the slightest regard for decency or common morality. ' The committee found that these people practiced free love, marriage being unknown to them. The chil dren born from these promiscuous unions are cared for out of the com mon fund. In this way girls grow up and become lost to their own parents at an early age, becoming the free wives of the rest of the community. Such conditions were found to exist that steps were at once taken to dis band the commune, and Investiga tions are being made to determine whether similar conditions exist throughout the Doukhobr villages In Saskatchewan and Alberta.
