Cundlff and Lewis Cundlff, who were arrested last night at Perry by Sheriff Chllders, were arraigned today befbre Justice Hough, ' when they waived time until tomorrow, when they could secure an attorney to en ter their plea. S. Cundlff Is charged with carrying concealed weapons. Lewis Cundlff is charged with threat ening to compel .another against his will to perform an act. The defend ants were In the employ of the Grande Ronde Lumber company, when one of the men quit and Immediately de manded the amount due him. This was refused until the bill went through the regular course of busi ness. The boys came to town, took aboard several extra drtnks, and af ter purchasing a bottle of liquor re turned to Perry where they entered the office of the company ani drew a revolver upon one of the employes and demanded his money on the spot. By a subterfuge they were side stepped out of the store and a 'phone message to the sheriff brought him to the scene of action and he placed the men under arrest. Vnlon Meetings Progress. A splendid spirit was present In the union meeting held at the Baptist church lat night. MM The remains of Mrs. Jack Smith will reach La Grande tomorrow night ac cording to a telegram to Mrs. Rankin. mother of the deceased, received last evening. The funeral will be held from the Presbyterian church Thurs day afternoon at 1 o'clock. Rev. Van Nuvs of Pendleton, officiating. Mrs. Smith died at Phoenix, Art.. last Saturday of consumption. Con ductor Smith, who was with her at the time, started home Immediately, and should reach here tomorrow night. ' Mrs. Smith Is the daughter of Mrs Rankin, who lives In North ' La Grande, and has several relatives here. She has many friends here, who are grieved at her untimely death. For some time she has llvec in Pendleton, where Conductor Smith made his headquarters while running on the Pendleton-Huntington run. PURCHASES A LARGE AUTO The largest auto to be owned by Union autoists. Is on the way here, destined to Hot Lake, for Dr. Phy. It is also the highest priced machine, costing 14600. The machine is of the Franklyn make, of 6-cyllnder grade and rated at60 miles an hour. This will, of course, be a wonder when It gets here. The sport of automoblllng In Unjon county Is rapidly becoming more and more popular. At present there are IT machines In La Grande and 34 In the county outside of La Grande. More are coming. Jay Van Buren Is In Portland with the Intention of pur chasing a new machine, and still others are contemplating the purchase of new machines. : TO ARRANGE SCHEDULE The schedule for the inland base ball league will be arranged at 0 meeting of representatives of the four towns In the league, at Pendleton this week or next Sunday, according to agreements reached at Pendleton yes terday, when Grant Lincoln visited the fans of that place. That La Grande may be In position to play the first game as will be set by the official schedule, the construc tion of the park here will be started at once, perhaps tomorrow. ' It is the Intention of local promoters to have about 25 of the candidates for the local team report In this city about the 15th of this month. NEWS OF DEATH. Stevens received a tele gram toduy from Lantervllle, Minn., stating that her mother, Mrs. John Andrlst, sr died there of cancer yes terday evening. ' Mr. and Mrs. Stovcns have recently returnl from a visit with Mrs. Stevens' mother, being call ed there by her serious Illness. John Andrlst, a butcher' In the Stllwell meat market.
