E. BEAN, La FALLS H f For a poor student at a normal school to acquire a fortune or over 8100,000 sounds like a storiette In a dream magaxlne, yet that Is the stroke of good fortune that but re cently fell to W. W. Scales, captain of the basketball team at the Weston Normal. As a result of a lawsuit that has Just been terminated In California the sum of 8108,000 goes to the mother of Scales, and Incidentally to himself. The Pendleton East Oregonlan, In speaking of the Incident, says: For some time past Scales has been a student at the Eastern Oregon State Normal school, and he has always been regarded as a serious-minded. In dustrious student The fact that he has some standing among his fellow students Is shown by the fact that they chose him to lead the track team to victory during the coming spring. Scales home is at Roseburg and he Is said to have been sent to the Weston Normal so that his education might be acquired in quiet toT.T,, T.'hrr; would be none of the temptations which beset the student with money In the larger schools. If such was the motive of the young man's mother, then she acted wisely, for though of a conservative disposition In some re spects. Scales Is said to have the in stincts of a spender. The family lived In L'tlca, N. Y., but later removed to California, and from there to Rose burg. Yesterday Scales was In Pendleton for the purpose of buying spring clothing and though he said little con cerning his good fortune, he was plain ly jubilant over the same, as well he might be. The 8105,000 which he has Just received was Involved In litigation over his father's estate and the amount was but recently awarded the mother and son by decision of the California court, before which the case was tried. Is waging an active campaign and are using the county press extensively. Dear Sir: Your inquiry of the 16th, Inst., received, and in reply will say the argument "A Dry Town Makes a Dead Town," is false,- as . Is .amply proven by the prosperity of Albany, Cprvallis, Eugene and every other town that went ''dry" two years ago In this valley. Business along all le gitimate lines has been Increasing right along. Albany is a cleaner, a prettier and more desirable city to live In since the saloons went out of existence, and the boose element sought other quar ters. , The open saloon Is the enemy of every legitimate business and occupa tion; It only tends to tear down. It causes money constantly to go out of a city, and In return It will give Its cltixens that which only disqualifies them to do honest and paying labor. The suloon and what goes with It Is a curse to any community, and the American people are waking up to the fact I do not believe there Is a power on earth that can keep this nation from doing the right thing In the end, as fa. as the open saloon Is concerned It will go, and must go. ' Simply from a purely business stand point, we cannot do otherwise. The local option law can be enforced and i uvia cr.foric3 unil In the places I have above cited. All that Is required to accomplish It, Is to have the citizens make up their minds to have It done. Very respectfully, ALFRED C, SCHMITT. , SUMMONS. :n the Circuit Court of the State Oregon for Union County. of Samuel T. Boothe, plaintiff, vs. Myr tle Boothe, defendant.
