Follow ing is one of the papers on this sub Ject, which was prepared by Mlxs Lillian linker of the high school: . That La Grande Is In despeiatr need of a new high school building boy op el a doubt by any one hnvlnr looked Into the matter. In the firs' place, the building now occupied could never have been Intended for r. high school. The rooms are arranger as the rooms of any grammar school and four of these on the lower floor complete the dignity of the hlg school. These rooms are small, th largest one having a stating capacity or only 4S. Tho other three roomr Hie very smnll. one being the library filled with tables and chairs for tin benefit of the commercial students. While classes are reciting, suii"ient are trying to study In the same room Take, for Instance, If an American literature class was reciting, and the were discussing sump prominent Amer ican author, In whom the student vu: Interested, would not the pupil, n. matter how he tried to concentrate hi: mind on his work, become Interested anil forget his own study entirely? If there were recitation rooms when there was nothing but words or ob- CHEAPER People' PLEA HK BUILDING Store ECONOMY knows who has the goods, week attracted hundreds of and many made', large pur- Garments at . Ho Is compelled to divide his attention between his class and those who are In the room. If he had the class alone could he not cover more ground and explain subjects much more thorough ly? There Is no laboratory for the pur suit of scientific studies. A student could derive three times the knowl edge If he had the apparatus with which to work and not merely a text book. Take the library. It Is true, there are rows upon rows of good books, but where are they. They are cooped up In one corner of a small room, stuffed with two tables, surrounded by chairs, occupied by commercial stu dents until it Is Impossible to get a glimpse of it. The students are not allowed to enter this room for books, for fear of disturbing the classes. They must choose their books by titles from a catalog, hand In the number on a slip of paper and the books are handed out to them. But how often ire they disappointed, for one chooses Trom the binding and print of a book, .is well as a title. La Grande has a Booster club. If they wish to bring a class of Immi grants that will be a credit to the town, what will be demanded of them? The water system and the educational ulvantages are among the first ques tions that are asked. What advan tages can we show the newcomer along this line? The water system Is not to be discussed here. The present high school Is the only place of higher education in La Grande. Is it such that the people wish to offer as an ad vantage? I think I am safe In saying It Is not. With a population upwards of 6000. why cannot we show our ad vancement along this line as well as others, and have a high school of which La Grande, as well at the sur rounding country may be Justly proud? Primaries of the republican, democratic. Indepen dence league, prohibition and socialist parties are being held this afternoon throughout New Tork states. The pri mary polling places were opened at 2 o clock and will remain open until . Delegates will be elected to the as sembly district conventions, those of the democrats, to be held In this coun ty on April S. while the conventions of the republicans will be held on April 7. The republican state convention will be held April 11. in Carnegie hall, and the democratic state conven tion on April 14. at the same place. The state convention of Hearst's Dartv the Independence league will be held here on May 2. Greatest Interest In today's primar ies centers in the attempt ex-Governor Odell has been making In this city to wrest the control of the local repub lican organization from Herbert Par sons. Followers of Parsons are at- lemntln. to mI1 the Intrusion of the Newburg politician with prospects of success. Efforts to elect true Hughes delegates at the pri maries In the Twenty-ninth assembly district have precipitated a bitter fight between the Hammond-Parsons fac tion and the men who want the dele gates to be for Hughes from sturt to finish. - All la apparently peaceful In . the democratic camp, with Tammany In full control of the situation. Leader Murphy has gone on record for an un Instructed delegation to the Denver convention, and the delegates selected In today's primaries will probably re flect this sentiment.
