Lewis became pastor and serv ed the church for five years, rendering gratuitous service. In 1874 the church Joined the Grande Ronde association at Wlng- vllle, and the following year the as sociation met with this church at the Ladd Canyon school house. Thirty delegates and visitors were entertain ed in four homes of the church. In 1871 Deacon John Perkins and family united with the church, adding greatly to th force.' From 1871 till 1884 the church was pastorlees, but held regular monthly meetings, main ly In the boms of Deacon Perkins. . In 1881 the association met again with the church, and by courtesy of the Methodist people, used their house of worship. In May, 1884, Rev. George T. Ellis became castor. Th. rhnmh then had 10 members, and settled Pastor Ellis on a $800 salary. From this date the body grew In members and strength. In a short time the "" tiitf uiao came on, and within a few months the "new church," the pride and rejoicing of a happy peo pie, was dedicated, costing 82.800. In this new home the church grew rap Idly. "Grandpa" Miller, of May Park, now In his 87th year, was the contractor and builder. During thi early pastorate of Mr. Ellis, the namt- of the church was changed to "The First Baptist Church, La Grande." Ii jaiiumy, joaa, raster JfiUls held u great meeting, being assisted by Revs Wheeler and Burchet. Thirty mem bers were added. Pastor Ellis closed his work In May, 1890. Jtev. A. LeRoy became pastor in 1890, rind served two years. Rev. Charles A. Rice succeeded and wat. pastor for two years. Rice was sue ceeded by Rev. E. A. Leonard, who served the church one year. Rev. C. A. Salyer was pastor for r.lne month In 1897. During a pastorlees Interim, August to December, 1897, the pres ent building site was purchased, anc the church edifice was moved from South La Grande to the new town. Pastor T. S. Dulln entered upon life- work and wrought well for two years, 1898-1899. Then followed Rev. C. R Lamar, who labored two years, to be succeeded by Rev. Carrol Gent, wh stayed one year. Gent was succeeded by Rev. G. W. Silk, snd he by Rev. J F. Day; who remained one year each These brethren served th church In times of financial depression, and her life was of changing character, firs) ebbing, then flowing. Discourage ments were many and fortune fickle At one of the darkest hours In hei life, October 1. 1905, Pastor W. H uioson was called and entered upor his labors.
