With wintry blasts blowing the
;' cozy warmth of the Thelsen home
t proved delightful to a number of la
dles of the Immediate neighborhood,
who gathered there, the guests of
Mrs. John Tholsen, for a social after
noon. The hours were passed In a
pleasant manner with sewing and
and' social converse. The gathering
was one of a series of parties given
by ladles of the neighborhood, and In
vitations were extended to the Mes-
dames Damon, Jiolinenkamp, Logan.
Dldion, Donohue, Grady, Green and
Rush. A light collation was served.
Funeral Today.'
The funeral over the remains of
the little daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
.a stringnam, whose death . was
chronicled In yesterday's Observer,
was -held this morning at the Central
Church of Christ, Rev. O. H. King.

Bishop O'Reilly of Baker City, Is a
guest with Father Whyte today. The
bishop la returning to his home In
Baker City, after a short trip to Free-
water, where he wa arranging the
preliminaries for the erection of the
new Catholic church at, that place.
Work on the new structure will begin
in the near future.

Myrtle Gates died at the Grande
Ronde hospital last evening at mid
night, as a result of ravages made on
her young body by appendicitis. She
was brought to La Grande on Monday
night, but the operation could not be
performed In time to prevent the re
sults of a ruptured appendix. For
several days she hovered between life
and death, finally going under at
midnight last night.
The remains have been taken to
Union, where the funeral will be held
from the M. E. church on Friday af
ternoon, Rev. W. W. Deal officiating.
