Tlmlier Companies oppose Tax.
The representatives of the Grande
Rondo Lumber company and the
f'rossett Timber company, have re
fused to pay the special road tax
levies In districts II and 18. In dis
trict 14, a special road tax of 10 mills
ind In district 18 of 8 mills was lev
ied. The tax made about $1000 dif
ference in the taxes of the Crossett
company, and about $150 In the
Grande Ronde company's taxes. This
they refused to pay. They tendered
the amount of their taxes, less this
apecliil tax to the sheriffs office last
week, amounting In all to about $3,
700, and. piled the coin, to the very
cent," on the desk, "but upon the ad
vice of the district attorney nd the
county court, the money was refused
on the grounds that it did not cover
