R. ac N. company's anti-summer fallow train In eastern Washing ton: The most enthusiastic advocate of the "wheat demonstration train," run today by the Washington State college over the lines of the O. R. N., never though of awakening the interest shown at the many meetings held to day. Every point .visited was a surprise to .those In charge of the work, for the crowds, the Interest and enthusi asm and the reluctance to leave the train shown by the farmers were an egreeable surprise to all. Colfax, the first point visited, was not expected to show many farmers, for a large farmers' convention was held there yesterday, but more than 200 people visited the cars, looked at the exhibits and as many as could heard the lec- It Is the purpose of the producers and agricultural authorities In charge of the train to Induce the farmers of the Palouse country, through which the train Is to run, to devote more of their attention to .diversified farming. It Is contended that by the method of summer fallowing, the use of thous ands of acres of choice tillable land Is lost annually by improper application of the "resting method." Elberton, the village where the sec ond stop was made, greeted the train with 125 enthusiasts, most of them farmers. A significant fact Was that at every point visited more Interest was shown in the lectures than In the exhlbitolns. "We came here to learn more about farming and want to hear every word that Is said," Is the ex planation offered by one farmer. Garfield, the prosperous town at the ntoritectlon of the O. R. & N. with the Northern Pacific and electric roads, gave ra greatest reception met with on the trip today. More than 50C persons, mostly formers, crowded the opera house and the lodge hall above where they listened to the lecturef and afterward passed through the ex hibition car. The people of Garfield were given- a vote of thanks top the splendid entertainment given the vis itors. A luncheon was served here. The lectures of Profexsors Elliott, Thatch er, Lawrence and Severance were lven the closest attention and the ex hlbltlon car was thoroughly Inspected 'ilvery business house In Garfield closed during the visit of the train ind the merchants turned out to wel come the visiting farmers and the lec turers. It Is to be hoped that Haines will soon be made a flag stop for the "fly ers." Not that we desire to travel more, but from the fact that It takes two of our citizens now to watch them go past one to say "there she comes," and the other to say "there she goes."
