Provided that the ordered clangs
arrive tomorrow morning, the post
poned clam bake for the La Grande
fire fighters will be held tomorrow
night This feed was arranged for
last Friday night, but the clam failed
to reach here on time. Chief Jones
and the committees in charge are
anxious to have every fireman In La
Grande out tomorrow night, as there
will be sufficient for all If any at all.

tomorrow evening, In the event the
big event has to be postponed again.
Harrow to Defend Friend.
Warren, O., March 5. When Al-
ford Kinsman, a wealthy resident of
Kinsman, this county, faces a Jury
this month to answer to the charge of
slaying George Blrrell, he will have as
his leading counsel Clarence Darrow,
the famous Chicago attorney who suc
cessfully defended Haywood and Pet
tlbone, the western labor leaders.
Darrow and Kinsman were schoolmates,-and
although the distinguished
attorney is still suffering from the ill
ness that sent him from Idaho to Los
Angeles for treatment, he has prom"
Ised to come to the defense of his for
mer companion. Blrrell Is alleged to
have been killed by Kinsman as the re
sult of a quarrel over the settlement
of the estate of the latter's father, of
which Blrrell was trustee.
Ice Men Prepare for Season.
Kansas City, Mo., March 5. Serene
In the confidence that the back of
winter has been broken and that sum
mer Is on the way, the dealers In fro
zen water in all parts of the west as
sembled In Kansas City today for the
tunth annual session of the Western Ice
Manufacturers' association. The con
vention will last three days and will
be largely devoted to a discussion of
the ice business In ' all it phases.
Nearly 250 manufacturers In the west
and southwest are members of the as
soclatlon. President E. R. Andler, of
Scdalla, Mo., Is presiding.

Omaha, Neb., March 5. Delega
tions favorable to the candidacy of
William J. Bryan will be selected by

ventions, which met here today.
