John Hyde is starting a residence on his lots, recently purchased from C. R. Hlbberd. H. 8. Alexander has secured an- ex cellent horse sboer. Mr. Alexander Is the man who has devoted SO years to working iron and Is the oldest black smith in America. B. F. Webb Is loading potatoes. The markets look better. ' C. R Hlbberd and S. L. Brooks vis ited La Grande on Market day. ' A traveling salesman had an apple here Saturday that he took from hotel table at Hood River. The speci men is a traveling advertisement. Saturday afternoon the residence of C R. Hlbberd on the Bennett ranch. caught fire and was totally destroyed. Insurance covers the loss partially. Mr. Masters was living In the house and everything he had In the building was burned except a box of pork. Mr. Asbury Stancial started a subscription for the benefit of Mr. Masters fam lly, and soon over $125 in money was donated. They are now living with John Kemp until Mr. Hlbberd can build another house, which he will do as soon as the Insurance Is adjusted A. F. Wilson Is loading a car of potatoes today. J. S. Smith had the misfortune to i a valuable horse In a .runaway Saturday. A four-horse team was leiii standing and suddenly became fright ened, causing the runaway. Before the plunging and struggling mass of horseflesh was quieted, one of the nltn"'s had broken a leg. Ho was an animal weighing n-.ore than 1600 and easily worth $200. J. L Wade and W. B. Each are riding In their new auto. J. M. Shanks has also recently purchased a machine. Harry J. Dclaplaln Is In the east selling potatoes for the I. M. & S. Co., and is doing well, according to reports. The Ladles' Aid society gave a sup per and had a fine program arranged here Saturday night, clearing about $35. Ten dollars of this amount went to the Masters' family. The society has sufficient funds to paper the church. L. Oldenburg visited his son, Bar ney, last week. Mr. and Mrs. Cable, of the Imbler hotel, were called to Eagle valley on account of the serious Illness of their little grandson The Willow Creek school closes Friday, March 6, with a dinner and program.
