Because roan la a rellglou being destined for immortality. His life Is not to be measured by time, but by eternity. Temporal Interests, however pressing and Important. cannot make up tbe sum of his efforts. If they do, then he Is courting- havoc and disaster. Lent Is now at hand, when tne Church raises her voice In solemn and affectionate warning, calling men to stoD and take stock of themselves. Are they living according to the fun damental law of human life? While they may not be guilty of vice and debauchery, yet at the same time, they may be disregarding those essen tial conditions which alone can insure success In its truest sense. These con dltions are tersely summed up in the text of Scripture quoted above. In other words, the guiding principle ol human life is to "fear God and keep His commandments." This Lenten warning is necessary for all. Not only to the man who is indulging his passions and vlcea and sinking lower and lower In the mire of sensuality, but also for those whose conduct appears respectable. The man who Is absorbed in bust- mA lirynr- nil hU nhltirnftons of a religious nature, or the woman wh( is as conspicuous at the social function as she Is inconspicuous in the House of God, are both In extreme danger because they are not directing the course of their lives according to the chart and compass of God's Hol Word. If too late, they find out their mistake, what will it profit the one that she had a ' whole houseful of bric-a-brac, trophies won at the bridge whlst table, or to the other, that hi amassed a million dollars?. Nor cat they complain of unfair treatment, be cause they will be served as they them selves served their employees whi proved unprofitable. It Is simply t question of fitness. The law of Go. Is to fit us for eternal life with all it. Illimitable and unrivalled opportunl ties for service under God. If, there fore, we ignore that law, how can w hope to be accepted? Our Church docs not, like some re Melons bodies, put certain amusement and luxuries under the ban becaus of the danger of their misuse an abuse. But this is not because she I; lax, but because she places the re iponslblllty where It rightly belong.' on the Individual. She Instructs hln In those priclples which should gover: Mis conduct and leaves the Issue to his "nllghtened conscience and sanctified ommon sense. By so doing she re jects the rights of the Individual conscience and the Individual llbert; .vhlch Is the birthright of the Chris Ian. But this method increases tin personal responsibility of the indi idual, for which he will have to ren er an account. As one appointed f ir that ptirpnife r call on all tho?e for whom I am re ponslble, to make the rn't of tin .eiitcn opportunity. For s .me '.f ut, il may be tbe !t we shall en.'oy. I-1 s then not forfeit the good and b.i log It will bring. For as one of out vn poets has said: Life is real! Life is onrnet! And the grave Is not Its goal; )ust thou art, to duxt return. t. Was not spoken of the soul." The special Lenten service will be is follows: Ash Wednesday (March 4): Morn ng, 10 a. m.; evening, 7:30 p. m. The week-day services will be Wed .esdays at 4 p. m. and Fridays' at 7:30 i. m. In addition to the above Bishop 'addock will hold special services on .londuy. March 9, and the three fol lowing days. These will be a devo .lonnl hour each afternoon at 3 o'clock ind each evening at 7:30. Holy Week services to be announced later. Those desiring to be confirmed will please notify the rector. The Easter offering will be for the '.enenil Missionary Apportionment and Diocesan assessments. Last year our offering amounted to $101.00. Let us not fall behind this year.
