Richard son and Mrs. Turner Oliver, at the home of the former. Funeral Today. The funeral of the infant child of Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Slerine, which died this morning, took place this after noon. R. Forrest and daughter, Mrs. Powell, have gone to Baker City for a short visit with friends. Frank Nelson, the lime man, who is part owner of kilns near Hunting ton, is a business visitor here today. Dr. William Hlckln made proof on a homestead near Hermlston, at the land office today. A special lodge meeting will be held in the La Grande lodge No. 41, A., F. & A. M., Saturday, February 29. The muddy condition of the road made hte. trip most anything but enjoyable. Mr, and Mrs. C. W. Nlbley of Salt Lake, arrived this morning. They are guests of Mr. and Mrs. George Stod dard today. The Misses Edith and Eva Woodruff left this morning for Elgin to spend Sunday with their sister, Miss Kate Woodruff, who is teaching near El gin. Mr. and Mrs. Hector McDonald of Walla Walla, are visiting Mr. and Mrs. Turner Oliver. They leave In the morning for Wallowa county. where they will visit friends. Charles L. Smith will go to Wallowa tomorrow morning to work as a saw yer in a Wallowa mill. He has been employed at the George Palmer mill heretofore. The wrecking crane went to Hunt ington this morning, where It will pick up the wrecked pile driver that has been resting in the river near Huntington for the past two days. Trivial or even weighty business matters should not stand in the way of a full attendance of Commercial club members and interested citizens this evening. D. E. Cox is looking after affairs at the city recorder's office today during the absence of Recorder Snook, who is In Union with Grand Warden Cool idge. H. E. Coolldge and I. R. Snook went to Union this morning to meet with the Union lodge of Odd Fellows this evening. Grande Master Scott will also visit the Union lodge. Superintendent D. W. Campbell, of the O. R. A N., arrived in La Grande last evening. He went to Huntington this morning, accompanied by Train master J. D. Matheson. Sheriff Chlldera returned last night from Salem, where he went with the man who broke Into the Newlln drug store and the J. M. Berry clothing es tablishment. The prisoner was incar cerated In the penitentiary to serve an eight years' term. ' Mrs. J. F. Johnson ' arrived this morning from Pendleton to transact business. She returns In a day or two and will, with - her husband, . have charge of the dining room in the Bow man hotel of Pendleton. Mr. and Mrs. Johnson were former owners of the Spokane cafe In this city. The small office room in the Foley building has been leased by District Manager O. A. Coffin, who will make the dlKtrlct headquarters of the Spokesman-Review there. A. J. Webb will also maintain a collection ff Ice there. The office was opened this afternoon. O. M. Heacock returned last eve ning from Pendleton, where he has been working at the Jeweler trade. Mr. Heacock has decided to return to La Grande for good, and will be pleased to meet his friends, both old and new, at the old stand, where he will do repair work and fit eyes. Mrs. Ernest Hall of Kamela, visited with her mother, Mrs. John Scranton, the first of the week. Mrs. Avery Harrison spent Thurs day with home folks in the Island. Dr. and Mrs. E. D.
