A party of surveyors are at work at
present under the charge of Engineer
Joseph A. West. Work on the exten
sion of the Hood River road has al
ready begun, a steam shovel and gang
having been put to work at Dee yes
terday. The proposed extension of the
Sumpter Valley line would cause It to
pass through Canyon City, Grant coun
ty, Oregon.

ent Joseph A. West of the Sumpter
Valley, and he said the report that
his road would build to Prlnevllle was
not correct, as no extension would be
made this year. Mr. Eccles has been
considering the advisability of extend
ing the road from Hood River and the
Sumpter Valley from Austin to meet
at Prlnevllle, but the work will not be
done this year because of the high
price of rails, the condition of labor,
and other matters that would affect
the work. The line will probably be
extended, but not this year. Baker
