To propagate sugar beet culture In Wallowa county la the practical plan formulated and which will be at tempted by the Amalgamated Sugar company during the coming year or two. The time when beet culture In that county Is to be established on a pay ing and practical basis varies with the time required by the O. R. & N..to complete the railroad Into the Interior of that rich county. However, before the road has reached lta destination and becomes a common carrier, the first seeds of eugnr beed Industry In Wallowa county will have been plant ed. Officers of the company are now In communication with head officials of the O. R. & N.' and on the result of these communications will depend tho exact steps to be taken. In the event that the branch line Is t completed this year, Wallowa far mers will be given an opportunity iu experiment with sugar beets. Representatives of the sugar com pany will visit Wallowa next week and distribute seeds gratia to the farmers there. Instructing and requesting them' to plant the seeds in a tentative way and should the road not be complet ed by harvest time, thus shutting off an easy market for the crop, the grow era can feed the crop to stock, thus making the experiment a paying one In any event Thus it will not cost the grower an outlay of actual cash, but will give him the opportunity of learning what his parctlcular farm can do with su gar beets at little coat. Should the culture prove profitable and success' ful in that county, which there is every reaaon to believe it will, Wallowa will become a rich tributary to the beet Industry of Grande Ronde valley. The construction of the railroad will af ford easy market for the crops. Local Campaign On. In the Grande Ronde the campaign for enlistment of individual growers has been fairly launched, and wit: the attractive prices that are assured the growers, the officials look for but little reluctance. Representatives are now In Cove, but they have made no report to the home office as yet aa hard cider, lu lew uuanUlira than one gallon.
