Senator Ankeny of Washington, Is it candidate tor re-election. itepre sentatlve Jones of Washington, la a candidate against him. If one sees an. opportunity to be useful to his beloved state In suggesting public ImDrovementa or appropriations, he moves cautiously to the accomplish ment of his purpose, lest the other beat him to It," as they say out west It had been a neck and neck race until Senator Ankeny came to the senate early one morning, and nerv ously awaited the order of business. which was the Introduction of reso lutions. " Then he rose, and, with a look of gleaming triumph In his eye. he presented a resolution asking the secretary of the navy to Inform the senate whether It was practicable to place three submarine torpedo boats on the Washington coast as a means of national defense, and as to the probable cost of the same. Then he rushed out Into the lobby to greet his private secretary, Arthur Blatter. "I guess that will hold Jones for a while," remarked the senator, with a look of exultation. But Statter was weeping. "It's no use," Stattcr sobbed. "That man Jones didn't even wait for In formation: he has Introduced a bill this day, appropriating 15.Q00.000 for five torpedo boats for the Washington coast, which goes us two better."
