LA GRANDE ' OREGON SHIP HAY TO f At EAST A seemingly well founded report has come to Baker county hay grow ers that the United States government Is preparing to purchase about 7000 tons of timothy baled hay, and that an agent of the government in Portland, or soon will be there, to contract with Portland commission men. If this be true eastern Oregon will be called upon to furnish the hay and as Baker county has a surplus, and the quality the best raised In Oregon, of course she will be In the market for perhaps the whole amount. That Pendleton's city council is seriously considering the proposition of municipal ownership of an electric lighting plant developed at last night's meeting, says the Pendleton Tribune. It came up in connection with the re newal of the contract with the North western Gas & Electric company for the city's lights. After a brief discussion the light commltte was authorized to enter Into contract with the company for two years only as It seemed to be the im presslon that by that time the city might be in a position to furnish its own light and power. The contract provides for the furnishing of eight additional street lights with the same cost to the city as at present, bringing the price paid for each arc light down to $7 per month. The proposition of municipal own ership was brought up by Assessor Strain who called attention to the fact that the city of Milton, which owns Its own plant, has under consid eration plans for Increasing the ca pacity of its plant and is willing to make the Increase sufficiently large to be able to furnish this city with all the light and power that would be needed for years to come. It was stated that Pendleton could either buy its power of the city of Milton or could ask permission to buy stock in the plant . The Milton proposition was submit ted as an alternative In case It should be impossible for the city to get a right of way across the reservation for an extension of its water system and the establishment of an electric light plant In connection. Strain declared that according to the assessment rolls of Umatilla coun ty and Walla Walla county, Washing ton, the total value of the Northwest ern Gas & Electric company's electric equipment Is $347,000, while the net annual Income of the company Is probably 1100,000,- or five per cent Interest on a principal' of $2,000,000. Even If the Income were only half this amount. It would be seen that the profits of the company on the amount of money Invested was some thing enormous. Pythian Sinters.
