'A ill If the democrats really want to elect the next president, why not se lect a candidate who reprt stnts some thing? says the Fatersoo ',N. J.) Eve ning News. In the peron of ex Governor William I louglas, the great shne manufacturer of Brockton, Mass.. the democracy would find an Ideal rund. date. Mr. Douglas la a self-made man. Ho las worked up from the" shoemaker's bench to hte governor"! chair He can sympathize with labor. He la head of a grent industry and is a capitalist and knows the needs of business and In dustry. He Is a banker and under stands the currency question. He Is a manufacturer and knows the tariff situation. He Is a constructive states man, as witness the wise legislation of Massachusetts In relation to sav ings banks and life insurance, nu is not Identified with the factions that have rent the democratic party. He carried the rock-ribbed republican state of Massachusetts by a phenom enal majority. He would reunite the democracy and lead it to victory. He has no past political record like Bry an's. He would make a safe and sane candidate; that is, if he could be induced to take the nomination. The truBts and grafters would not like him, but the great body of the com mon people, the business men and the farmers would elect him. The democracy are In the political wil derness. If William L. Douglas would take the nomination, he would be the political Moses that will lead them to the promised land of victory ,at the poll next November.
