The logging engine at the George
Palmer lumber campa beyond Elgin,
has been more or legs wrecked and
la In the local chop for repairs.

track construction at the camps. Is
In the city during the time that the
engine la being repaired, and if all
goes well, he will return to the woods
tomorrow or perhaps not until the
next day.
Nearly four miles of track have
been laid, construction work having
only recently ceased. When the foot
or more of snow disappears, addition
al steel will be placed.
There are 75 men employed at the
tamps at present. Those who were
detailed to the loading department
have Joined the cutting gang since the
engine was put out of commission.

SPOKANE
Hurry Miller, of Miller & Draper,
who are arranging the local Elks"
minstrels, has gone to Spokane, where
he will stage a large minstrel per
formance on Thursday of this week.
Mr. Miller has had three Irons in tin
fire while working in La Grande, but
none have been neglected. As soon
as ha "pulls off the Spokane min
strel show he will be back In Ln
Grande, dividing his time between
here and Paker City until both have
been successfully staged.
Mr. Miller has been In the minstrel
business fur something like seven
years, and the local talent assisting
In the Elks' minstrels to be presented
here In the near future, is receiving
real benefit In working under the
capable direction of the. minstrel
loader.

for the republican nomination of cir

Ten men. the largest number ever
employed In cleaning cars In this city,
are now employed by the O. R. & N.
in cleaning the passenger coaches of
the three trains which lay over in this
city every night, says the Pendleton
East Oregonlan.
The coaches which are cleaned here
are those of the Spokane train, the

this work requires the labor of 10 men

the cur Inspection and air Inspection
system on the mountain division.
All the trains on the mountain di
vision now have the air inspected at
Umatilla and La Grande, the regular
division points and so the repair crew
which was formerly maintained here
has been cut down and the car clean
