ARTISTS ' GATHER fOR Twenty-five of the tip-top local min strel talents have been picked for parts In the Elks' minstrels, which la to be presented here on February 11 and 12, to swell the new Elks' build ing fund. These 25 artists and who ever else feels Inclined to help the good move along, 'are asked to appear at the Elks' hall this evening, when full and final plans will be formulat ed. Parts for the olio, end-men, singers, dancers and "stunt" men are SCRIP LIGIil Advance Information lias been re ceived by Agent J. H. Keeney from the O. R. & N., pertaining to tffe fu ture sale of scrip boons. Auuul U.c first of February there will be three or four classes on sale, which will be of much the same nature as the diss now on sale. The exact rulings which will control the sale of the new books which are soon to be out. Is not defin itely known. Locally, there Is little demand for the 830 scrip books, which went on sale the first of the year. In many ways the scrip Is convenient and in the end Is really a money saving means. To a person contemplating two trips to Portland within the year. It will mean the saving of 84.50, as the 1000-mile scrip book Is purchased for 830 and provides for a rebate of 84.50 when used up. The scrip can be used as mileage or to purchase tickets. It Is presumed the new set of scrip will be on sale under similar rules. BUS IMPS That Congressman W. R. Ellis of this city. Is closely guarding the inter ests of the people of the eastern Ore gon congressional district, Is shown by the measure for the relief of desert land entrymen Introduced by him in the house last Saturday morning. The measure Is to provide for the relief of desert land entrymen who may have been delayed In making fi nal proof on their claims by reason of floods, washouts or other unavoidable obstacles anil extends the time of making such proofs to April 1, 1910. The time for the reclamation of such land Is also extended to October 1, 1909. A Washington dispatch says of the bill Introduced by Congressman Ellis: Representative Ellis today Intro duced a bill providing that the time for reclamation of all lands covered by desert land entries In Umatilla county, Oregon, heretofore made, where It can be shown in the satisfac tion of the department of the Interior that the entryman has been hindered, delayed or prevented from reclaiming such land by unusual floods, either directly or Indirectly, Is hereby extend ed until the first day of October, 1909, and the time for making final proof of reclamation of said lands Is hereby extended to the first day of April. 1910.. ' There Is need of more help. The Elks want all talent available to be present this evening. It is not neces sary for admittance to the cast to carry en Elks' pin or password. The lodge wants all, regardless of lodge re lation. Be out this evening and help to make the coming event one long to be remembered. m,aS3 imitiMv Peep's Are often capalil of doing injury to less positive people, the very emphasis of their affirmation making up for lack of argument and v. ant of evidence. And the worst of all dogmatist are those doctors who, harking back to some old dogma of the sellouts, Insist that certain patient are beyond all medical help, because, forsooth, their diseases are beyond the limited medical know ledge of the dogmatist ' "When the physicians had given m p I was t.ured by the use of Pr. Pierce'l Golden Medical Discovery." Thut state tnent, varied sometimes in form but identical in fact, is one of the common expressions found in the letters of those cured by "Golden Medical Discovery. Sometimes the statement mns: "I was I given up bv four doctors," showing a I desperate effort to find relief in local practitioners, nui nowever tne story begins, it almost invariably ends with the statement, " I am perfectly cured by Dr. Pierce's Golden Medical Discovery." Persons suffering from " weak" lungs, bemoi rhages, deep-aoated cough, ema ciation ana weakness, have lieen restored to perfect health by the " Discovery." The philosophy of the cures effected by this marvelous medicine is not hsrd to understand. Life is sustained by food, digested and assimilated. The basis of health is a good appetite and a sound digestion. In almost all case of disease loss of appetite is an early symp tom, and this is promptly followed by a wasting oi the flesh. For some cause the food eaten is not being converted into nutrition and the body ana its or gans, being starved, must grow weak. There is only one way to get strength and that is bv food. Dr. Pierce's Golden ' Medical Discovers- heal diseases of the itomach anil adiea trains of digestion and nutrition, so cabling the body to assimilate the needed no-ansnment, Thus various forms of "weakness," so- called, are c.red by the "Discovery" "weak" lungs, "weak" heart, "weak" nerves, "weak" or sluggish liver, etc., because the organs are made strong by food, which is perfectly digested and assimilated after, the "Discovery" bus healed the diseases of the stomach and associated oigans of digestion and nu- tntion.
