Gracey at Tslng tau. reports as follows regarding the opportunity for the sale of butter and chcenc In China: It Is only a few years since butter was unknown to tho Chinese, when It wob never lined, and when even the milk from the cows could not be pur chased, but recently Chinese restaur ants have taken to the serving of "European style dinners," and the better cIohs of Chinese are becoming large consumers of butter nnd other European luxuries. In the ports where fresh butter Is obtainable this Is given the preference, but In th In terior Chinese cities tinned goods are being largely used. The French but ters command much the largest sale In the Interior, the brands ure well known and It Is difficult In China to replace brands which have been long used. Tho only possible way of dis placing known goods Is by a thor oughly conscientious and complete campalKn of personal representation. Cheese Is only Imported In China for the use of the European residents. It does not lis yet appeal to the pecu liar palate of tho Chinese nice, but during the past four years the value Of the butler Importation has Increas ed over 00 per cent. Undoubtedly much of (he butter trade could bo again secured by ex porters In the United States, especial ly on the Pacific coast, making ar rangements with the shipping com panies to bring out their goods In cold storage, and have "their agents In Shanghai or Hongkang make similar arrangements with the local shipping i companies by shipping In cold stor age. The Australian, French and Danish butters now obtainable on this market are certainly superior to any American product thut can be pur chased, . The following prices are given by a local merchant: First quality table butter, 1 pound tin, Jl: 2 pound tin, $1.90. First quality cooking butter, 70 cents per pound; second quality, at (0 cents, or 4 pound tin, $1.85, all quotations being In Mexican curren cy. - . ' FOOD FOR THOUGHT. The "Signs of the Times," In an ar ticle setting forth the necessity for a missionary campaign which covered two entire pages, contains the follow ing figures relative to expenditures In the United stales, ns- follows: Foreign missions , Chewing gum . . . Jewelry v . . , Patont medicines Tea and - coffee . . Soft drinks 7,500,000 15. 000,000 n,50'i,ono 75.476,032 99,229,310 107.B36.OO0 Confectionery 178,000,000 Army and navy 270.638,009 Tobacco ....... 949,500,000 Liquors 1,744,447.673 ' AMERICAN APPLES IX NORWAY. Consul General Henry Pordewlch of ChrUllanla, states that American drld and evaporated apple products, are freely used In Norway. The total an nual Import of dried apples" exceeds 1,100.000 pounds, of which 150,000 pounds come from the United States direct, but a much larger part of the Import Is also American product seld to Norway by German Jobbers, but is ; credited as Imports from Germany The Import duty on drl.d sad evjip orated apple, I, 8 j cents per pound, Politicians will awatt with Interest the battle that la being waged by the Oregon delegation over the senate confirmation of ChrlHtlan Schuebel as United States district attorney of Ore gon. It seems to be the balance of the Oregon delegation against Sena tor Bourne. From thla distance It looks like Bourne will lose out. ' It does not seem possible for Oregon to have a united delegation on anything, However. If their differences are sim ply confined to the appointments, that Is not so serious, as a division on other matters. There are scores of com petent men to fill the few offices that are In the hands of the delegation to fill, and as far as the great masses of the people are concerned, It matters very little which one draws the salary, Some of our citizens are getting things mixed on registration, from the fact that both city and county regis tratlon books are for the present time open. Voters should register twice, at the office of the city recorder to vote at the city election which tukos place on March 9; at the county clerk's of fice today and tomorrow the books will be found In the rear office of the Farmers & Traders' National bank for the primaries, the June state election and the presidential election In November. Some are of the opinion that one registration Is sufficient for boththis Is erroneous. You must register for city election and you must register for the county and state and presidential election. Two registrations being required. While, everything considered, those who are In authority and are In close touch with our public school, are unanimous In saying that this has been the most successful year In our history. Everything Is going along so smooth and the students as a whole are doing most excellent work. While this Is true, there Is going to be a de mand made on the school board to provide for the Introduction of music, that Is, vocal singing, tho same that is In universal nso In all of the very best large schools, and there Is a strong sentiment for It being adopted In our schools here. Some of .the rooms, we understand, do, but It not general. CITY CHURCHES Catholic Cliurch. Low mass, g a. m.; high mass, 10 a. m.; rosary and benediction follow ing 10 o'clock mass.
