Full Meaning of tli Term.
When the Portland Oregonlan com
plained of Ignorance relative to the
term "Jackpot," t elicited the sympa
thy of some who would have that pa
per fully Infoi
h i inn,
James A. F.e of Pendleton, has of.
fered his explanation, and now M.ivne
Johns of Haker City writes the Ore
gonliin as follows:
I have been patiently walling for
one of my associates to give the Ore
gonlan the desired Information as to'
what is meant by "Jackpot." k
Fnder the fads stated by him. I ri.
not think Dr. Moore makes a correct
use of the term. He Is quoted as say
ing that all the fees paid to the statv
medical board are Macod in a "Jack
pot" and dIUded equally among the
members. This must be sul generis
with the medical board. It Is certain
ly an exception to the rule to have an
equal division of the funds In a
"Jack-pot."
I am at a loss to know why the Ute
K'nilan should refer this question i
eastern Oregon. Judging from the
last. It' Is very apparent that people
in eastern Oregon have but little
knowledge about "Jack-potg."
Personally, my own knowledge has
been limited and very expensive. Ac
cording to my understanding of the
term, about two years ago 1 got Into
a Jack-pot" with my friends Mi
Wlthyeombe, Mr. deer, Mr. Sch'elbrede
and the late lamented Harvey Brown.

It was a typical sceno ..f th

i known the world over as "Shorty,"
j us this morning industriously reduc

mains, in a mortar securely "held be
tween a pair of mining boots. This
quart, was taken from the mine In
which he Is Jointly Interested with
waster MecTianle J. T. lJiniriv
tin King of this city, and Martin Kern
"""se. The mine is located within
a few miles of the famous Boise basin
In Idaho. The ore "Shorty" was
panning this morning reolr..H n

In my Judgment, when a republican
becomes a candidate for a primary
nomination to a state office, he will
get Into a "Jack-pot." especially 'if he
Is an eastern Oregon man. While I
think the Oregonian and my other
friends for honorable mention ns a
candidates for congress, I have no de
sire at this time to get Into another
"Jack-pot" and prefer to practice
law and live In Baker City.

New York, Jan. 10. Because of di
latory tactics In beginning practical
construction work, the franchises of
the New York, Westchester ft Boston
and the New York & prt Chester
railways will probably be declared
forfeited by the board of estimate and
appointment at its meeting today. The
companies are ulleged to be owned bv
the New York, New Haven & Hart
ford, by reason of Its recent t.urchB
of the Milbrook company, a holdlnir
company. The franchises of the two
companies were granted in 1902. and
the Intention was to build a six-track
railroad between New York and Bos
ton. Since then less than $1,000,000
worth' of 'construction work has been
done.
