this morning la the case of the State
against Ben West, and a special, ven
im of IS men was summoned. The
Jury had not been completed at
o'clock but It is expected that all the
men will be secured today and the In
troductlon of testimony will begin to
morrow. Six Jurors were secured
from the regular panel and no trou
ble was anticipated In securing the
others. There was some trouDle witn

the Jurors on account of the belief of
some who do not want to Inflict the
death penalty. Lomax and Anderson
have charge of the case for the state,
while John L. Rand and W. H. Stray-
er are counsel for the defendant

Father Heinrlch was one of the
oldest and best known priests In the
northwest and had lived in Oregon
consecutively for 3 years. He was
born In Austria 60 yean aro and too., i
his philosophical and theological stud
ies at the American college at Louvaln,
Belgium. Ho came to Portland with
Archbishop Elnnchet and was ordain
ed a priest of the aroh-dioceso of Ore
gon. Hu was connected with the ca
thedral In Portland and was a!so su
perintendent of St. Michael's college
for boys for several years. For 18
years he wa stationed In Roseburg
and tho territory p.djolnlng. After-
ards ho served for several years as
astor of St. Francis church In Kart
Portland and later on was appointed
a superintendent of St. Mary's home
r orphans at Beavertnn, Ore.
Of late years he has been stationed
Baker 'lly, when! ho was estecm-
d und loved by all who had the
pleasure of his acquaintance.

of the high schoohPtle club Is said
to be the finest college glee club now
traveling. They sing the old planta
tlon songs with that utter abandon
which characterizes the negro race.
They also sing music of a more diffi
cult type, but there are no Black
Pattls among them and no straining
after operatic effects.
