In J., . Jan. 2. Demo cratic conventions were held today In the IS districts of Indiana tor the se lection of new members of the state central committee, who will meet next Wednesday and reorganize by select ing a chairman and secretary. Stokes Jackson of Greenfield, Is one of the most prominent aspirants to the chair manship, although the opposition to the Taggart ' regime will support James Kirby Risk, while many of the Taggart men will use their Influence to secure the selection of Gilbert Hendren. It Is hoped that by the time the committee meets a spirit ot harmony will have:. been restored among the democratic leaders Of the state and that the bitter fight expect ed in the election of a chairman will not materialize. Indiana democrats are hopeful of victory in the coming state and national elections. .Already a number of candidates have been spoken of for the governorship, among the most promising of whom -is Carroll K. McCullough, a wealthy manufac turer of Anderson and a member of the state legislature. John W. Kern of Indianapolis will not again seek the nomination. Despite stiff opposl tlon In ecrtain Influential quarters, It is apparent that Bryan Is a favorite among Indiana democrats and the Hoosler delegation to . the national convention will probably favor the Nebraskan. New Orleans, La., Jan. 2. Lee Cole man, the Calcasieu parish murderer, whose friends have made a notable and determined effort to save him from the gallows, will be hanged to morrow unless Governor Blanchard grants another stay. This Is consid ered unlikely, as Coleman's case has already been passed upon by a board of pardons, consisting of the lieuten ant governor, the attorney general and the Judge who presided at the trial. This board refused to Interfere with the execution of the sentence of death passed upon Coleman. The crime, of which Coleman was convicted was the murder of Deputy Sheriff Sctlumaker, which occurred during a saloon brawl In the little town of De Rlddor early last October. Enmtly had existed be tween Coleman and the deputy sheriff fpr some time, culminating In their meeting In a saloon and the shooting of Schumaker. At the trial Coleman declared that he believed his life was in danger and that he shot the deputy sheriff In self defense. It was shown at the time that Coleman frequently became Intoxicated and was at such times of a quarrelsome disposition. The execution was first set for the latter part of this month, but a re prieve was granted by the governor. at the request of Coleman's friends, In order that the board of pardons might Investigate the case. OHIO POLITICS. Fight for the Endorsement of Tuft or : Fornker. Columbus, O., Jan. 2. In response to the call Issued by Chairman Brown the republican state central committee convened at the Neil house at 1 o clock this afternoon. The members will arrange for the state convention and the meeting will mark the begin nlng of the contest for the Ohio dele gation to the national convention. It Is expected that a date early next month will be selecteu for the state convention. The selection of an early date Is looked upon as a victory for the Taft forces, which are In control of the central committee. That the committee will demand primaries for state convention delegates, the Issue be the endorsement of Secretary Taft or Senator Foraker, Is almost assured. Chairman Walter R. Brown Is known to favor this method of procedure, and the other members will doubtless agree with him. The Foraker forces are opposed to a convention before March, and will fight the plan to name an early February date.- ISLAXD CITY ITEMS. The Hunter families spend New Year's day with Mr. and Mrs. J.
