Rotterdam Feb 12 Up to ten o'clock
this morning, no assistance could be ren
dered to the wreck of the German steam
er Berlin which went to pieces on a sand
bar off the harbor yesterday, causing im
mediate death to more than one hunnred
and fifty people, yesterday.
Ten persons spent the night on the
wreck, hanging on for their lives. The
winds went down yesterday afternoon and
by ten o'clock today the sea was still
rolling high but not enough as to prevent
a rescue. Boat reached the survivor
and returned to the shore with the ten
people. , ' ,

Sandford, Ind., Feb 22 A dynamite
explosion this morning wrecked the Meth
odist church and the central stores of J,
W. Reese and two others. Citizens allege
that the dynamiting was , done for a
sheriffs raid last Tuesday on a "blind
tiger" This town the place where the
Big Four train was wrecked by dynamite
recently.

to returns issued today, paid dividends
during the year 1906 to the amount $27,
086,858. This constitute a record. The
total dividends paid since the' South
African war amount' to $97,865,482.

the railroads to give passenger service at

and labor questions. The local leaders of

Many Citizens Construct
Sidewalks During February
Ben Noyes, maT.ager of the Noyes
Skating Rink is in Baker City today,
making arrangements for a plan that will
be pleasing to local roller 6katin enthus
iasts. Th9 composition rollers which
have heitherto been used on all skates,
will be'removed and steel rollers affixed
instead. Mr. Noyes says it will be a week
or two before the entire change is made
While in Baker City he will observe how
th system is working in that city, as it
has alreadv been adopted there. A
sample of the steel roller skate, trans
formed from the composition roller, proved
very desirable aftor a thorough test yes
terday.
PROMOTERS CONSULTING ARCHITECTS
J. W. Stuchell the Bakor City manager
of the Lar.g St Co. wholesale houses, one
of which is in Baker City, is in the city
today consulting with architects. This
company has already purchased a site
and the presence of Mr. Stuchell today
in consultation with architects may be
taken as indicative that plans for the
building will soon be under perfection.
Mr. Beckley of Bakor City and who is
also a representative of the company was
in the city today in company with Mr.
Stuchell looking after preliminary affairs.
City Street Superintendent isc nstruct-
ing a sidewaik abutting the property of
Mrs. Gaorga Ackles on the North Side,
which for durability, will be better than
the most walks in the city. Mrs. Ackles
has reached an ultimatum that an expen
sive walk is the cheapest in the end. and
which this idea as a motive, has orde. ed
the construction of a walk that will be
pleasing, not only to the public who may
use it but to the city superintendent.
Two inch fir planking, seven feet long
will be used along the 117 feet of the
property. Mr. Stoner says that if all were
huiit on this plan th sidewalk problem
would be materially solved.
During the present month a suprisingly
larse amount of sidewalks has been con
structed. Mrs Kirk, on 7 & O Street ha '
a new walk of 197 feet. Ed Murphy ha
built 60 feet in Old Town. Ed Fowler
120 feet across the track. Mr Campbell
60 feet. J M Chapman 167 feet.
Already, there has been over sixteen
hundred feet of walk bui t about th new
brick school house on the North side.Mor

If the sidewalk building fev r continues
many of the undersirable pieces of walk
that the pedeistrains occasionally encount
ers will have disappeared.
