Judging from the unusually large numbers of inquries, the various Commercial Clubs oftbefstata are receiving, immigration for 1907 wilt be m excess of any previous year. The La Grande Commercial Club have the names of over 1000 peoplewho have written for information. Those who are in a position to guess rathe r close, are of the opinion tha t arrang ements will be perfected this year where by the 0. R. & N. will extend don the Grande Ronde to Lewiston. There are reasons for this, a water grade from La Grande to Portland, and a large body of timber that will :emain until the road is built. 1 flu fi I f I I - , 1 J.JXJ U.il - I AFTER XMAS URCHASES! Spokane women propose to establish a training school for their household help, The idea may be a splendid one but view ed from an Oregon standpoint they may have difficulty in securing'attendants. Hon E L Smith of Hood River was elected president of the Northwestern Fruit Growers Association which met in Seattle a few days ago. Hood River as usual had an enthusiastic delegation pres ent and in face of all her activity not a few people wonder why Hood River is a ways to tha front. It is doubtful at that meeting, which was attended by several hundred of the leading fruit growers of the Northwest, if Grande Ronde valley was mentioned or even thot of. Those who have large property interests while their names appear on the petition are in hopes for several years at least, that the prayers of their petition will not be granted. They know that their taxes will be higher and no one but a few office seekers will be benefited in the least. The city of Union is now heavily in debt and their warrants are now back nine years. Not a very good showing to ask for increased taxation.
