There is not an idle man in the city. La Grande will never have good streets until we nave a sewerage system and when that will be, is merely a matter of conjecture, Negotiations are on foot for the organi zation of trust of glue manufactures. Here is a combination that ought to stick. S1IPMENTS TO LIVERPOOL Recent advices from Liverpool state that in the week ending October 1 3, 25, 000 barrels of apples were landed at that port from North America. In the busy season consignments range from 60,000 to 109,000 barrels a week, and such large shipments are expected to arrive in November. One of the chief authorities of that port on the apple trade states that they have received in formation there that the apple crop in Canada is only a moderate one, while the crops in New England. Nova Scotia, and California are on about an average, and in the district along the Hudson river the crop will be practically nil. But the crops in the Western states are very large. The Canadian government has taken steps to improve the grading and packing of Canadian apples, the barrels being examined by inspectors before shipment, and consequently the fruit is arriving much better grades and packed than was previously the case. It is hoped that Americans will pursue a similar course, and thus strengthen them selves in the British market. Those who have investigated are of the opinion that not less than 400 car loads of apples will be shipped from Union county this season. This means in the neighborhood of $150,000 to the growers. Smith in creamery building 1 The farmers of the valley are jubilant over the warm rain that has been general all over the county. The ground was in the proper condition to absorb it all. The streams have raised very little. There is a limit to everything, even the Standard Oil Company, which has been ruling with an iron hand, has fcund that it has to respect the law. "God s mill grinds slow, but sure." WORK GUARANTEED PRICES REASONABLE A charter has been secured to build a 1 0-mile railway tunnel under Belle Isle Straits to connect Newfoundland with Canada. It is said that the franchise allows twenty years for construction, and the Newfoundland government contributes $75,000 annually.
