M ' M lO AN INCIDENT ALONG LIFE'S PATHWAY Not long ago there di-;din a 'A'alla Wa' la cell, a poor. rad. bloated, unkempt wretch without a friend in the broad world to shed a tear of sympathy. No one cared for him. ar.d no one mourned him. "Unwept, unhonored and unsung." his bones were ratt'ed over the stones to the potter's field. Fifteen years agr, this man br ght-eyed erect, clean-limbed and vigorous, stepped aboard his tram at Pendleton. He ware the handsome uniform ot a ranroaa con ductor a place to which he had steadily ascended from the bottom round of the ladder. He greeted his friends with a smile and hs friends were everywhere. On duty, he indulged in a social glass now and then with boon companions. He was popular, debonaire and liberal. He had a kind heart, and was lauded as one of the most affable conductors on the road. His revels increased in frequency for Pendleton was then and is now a so- ! ciable place and he liked to make merry wir.n them in a drinking bout. His salary proved inadequate for this pleasant pas lime, and now and then some company money went over the bar easy "pick up" end nobody to reckon with except a poss ible "spotter" despised by him and his kind, as the dirt beneath their feet. But the inevitable happened. He lost his job. He took inferior positions, de scending the ladder much more rapidly uian i.o imd arisen. His appetite now a giant, powerful, pers.stant. insati able. Vice claimed him at last as all its own, body and saul, and hb filled a drunk ard's grave. This man was a "good fellow" and "one of the boys." He became a "poor fellow" and "one of the bums." Was the game worth the candle? Was hie wrecked life worth a few years of fleeting pleasure? Weston Leader. ow of NEW JERSEY m SEASON 'S ( AM 0 ( S HATCH (Serlpps News Association) Jersey City.
