Mr. Johnson turrted the books of the office over to Chester Newlin who has been appointed deputy by sheriff Chi Id era. Mr. Johnson's carrer in the sheriffs office of Union county has been a lengthy one and during that time he has conducted the business of that office in a creditable manner. Four and half years ago, he was appointed deputy under former sheriff Pennington. In this capacity he served until Mr. Pennington resigned a year and a half after his election to the second term. After Mr. Pennington's resignation the county court appointed T. B. Johnson as sheriff to fill the unexpired term. Last iriiui Ahtr. Mr; F. P Childer:, the pree ent sheriff was elected, T. B. Johnson was appointed deputy. During the six months that have intervened the books in the sheriff's office have been in the hands of Mr. Johnson. Sheriff Childers stated this morning that the books, are in first ' class condition in the very minutest particulars. The bookeeping in that office requires an abundance of work and skill and all these things have been dutifully practiced by the resigned deputy. Chester ' Newlin, the new deputy is an expert bookeeper and will meet the requirements of the office cap ably. Mr. Newlin is a young man of ex amplar habits, and possesses a thorough and practical education. There is no doubt but that the precedent established by the resigned deputy will be closely ad herred to be the new deputy. Mr. New lin has a large number of friends who will be pleased to learn of his appoint ment to this office of trust. La Grande, Oregon Dro a line naming work, and I w:(J r.arr.e the rgV. rrse. ia h iireairume HtMdll 0 IIEIHI 111 MM UH ABATED (Scrtppt Newt Association) Paris, Nov, 8 Countess Castellane. nee Anna Gould, has won the contention be tween her and Boni Castellane, and there will be no trial for divorce in the court The court will make its decision from cumentary evidence submitted. Thit determination was announced with a de cision which will be rendered next Thurs day. This sudden turn of proceedings means that the names of the women com plicated with Boni will remain a secret anr Boni will thus have a chance for his life. Today't proceedings took a turn to the rediculous and all Faris is laughing, as well as gossipping, except Boni, who perhaps sees no humor in the situation. The reason that the count is so anxious for reconciliation, is that at the divorce seemed safe, creditors are trying to collect the vast millions that Boni owes. In summoning up the arguments today M. Bonnett. Boni's attorney said, "I have a mission today of bringing Countess Castellane the assurance of an 'undying affection from an unhappy husband." Attorneys for the creditors showed in the opening statements to the court to day that as soon as the divorce proceed ings close, they intend to hold the countess jointly responsible with count Boni, It it deolared that the million franca annually alloted the count and countess by the Gould family, of New York, it not tuffi cient to meet the expenses of the Castel lane household, hence Boni and the count ess have gotten Jointly in the hands of the usurers. It is dec ared that both signed papers; upon which money was loaned. AUDREY COMING J, C. Ardrey, the well-known piano tun er, will be in this city soon.
