voted $135,000,000 dollars for a pro
gramme of improvements of the navy,
the extension to cover a period of eight
years. $'.2,003,000 of this sum will be
used to repair present vessels among
them being the former Russian 'vesseis
captured an raised. Many vessels in
the service are now to be replaced. The
hew programme provides for a battleship
Squadron of eight vessels representing
the strongest and newest types, twc
armoured cruiser squadrons of four ships

Th's morning shortly after the sun had
become fairly well established above the
mountain top, the Hon. C. D. Huffman
drove up to the Observes office with an
assortment of pjmpk'n, and squashes
which would have enabled the "Royal
Chc-f" to have prepared a midnight sup
per for "Suzanne." The' assortment in
cludes pumpkins of all sizjs and shapes.
There are the good old fashioned kind
whose yellow shade would make a gold
standard man remember the campaign of
1896, and then a dozen or two of the
Mather Hubbard" variety, with warts
which caused the editors to remember the
days when small boys acused each other
of playing with frogs. On the top of the
heap was a few of the class which are
known to those versed in pumpkin culture
as the ''Japanese Sun Burst
The beauties of the particular variety
can enly be appreciated after a personal
inspection.
To fill up the jochy box and balance
the load Mr. Huffman added a score or
two with musk melons. The statement
was made on several occasions that
muskmelons could not be successfully
grown in this valley, but the samples
brot to this office brand the statement
as false.
After a careful calculation the editors
arrive at the conclusion that they have
sufficient p.e material now on hand to
furnish twenty-three hundred and forty
one full sized and able bodied pies of six
teen varities. With what other eatables
left over from las' year, about all that is
lacking for the annual Thanksgiving
dinner is a forty pound turkey and a crate
of cranberries. As the festive day is yet
some time time removed we have hope
that something will turn up yet.

for two days reading "20 men wanted to

have passed by this sign only one man
