the department of agriculture. Investi
gations have proved that corn cob are
of large commercial value for the manu
facture of alcohol Department experts
have been busy with com cobs at a can
nery in Hoopeston, 111. A ton of green
cobs, that have formerly been wast, will
make 1 1 gallons of alcohol. A ton of
green corn stalks will also yield alcohol
to the amount of 6 to 16 gallons. The
suggestion now it that distilleries be
established in connection with canneries.
The new denatured alcohol law opens
the way notonly for cheap fuel but for
big profits from many farm products that
have been going to waste.

Texas produced more crude petroleum
in 1904 than has ever been credited to a
single state in one year 50,400.000
barrells. California's output from its oil
fields in 1904 was 29,600,000 barrels,
taking first place up to that time. The
190S output in Texas was an increase of
8.000.000 barrels over Texas' record in
1904.

According to the Railway Gazette of
September issue, the Harrimancompaniet
have ordered, for delivery next spring,
4050 boxcars and 1450 flat eais, to be
distributed over the following lines: Union
Pacific, Oregon Short Line, Oregon Rail
road & Navigation company. Pacific sys
tem, Morgan's Louisana & Texas, Louis
iana, Western & Cananea, Yaxui River
& Pacific. Harriman has also ordered
625 oil tank cars, 600 gondola ears, 6000
stock cars and a number of dump cars.
With about 400 miles of new trackage
now under construction in the- Lewiston,
Klamath and Coos Bay projects, a large
amount of additional equipment will be
needed next year to meet requirements of
tiaffic on the new lines.
It is said the new cart ordered will be
distributed over so wide a territory and to
i many thousands of miles of road that they
will literally be bet in the shuffle. The
ystemt named operate upwards of 1 2,
miles of track.
The Northern Pacific has ordered 4000
box cars and it now in the market for
1500 box cart and 1 000 tteel dump care.

NEIGHBORHOOD CLUB
The Ladies Neighborhood Club will
have their first meeting of the year on
Tuesday October 2, at 2 o'clock. A full
attendance Is desired as there it much
business of importance to be considered.
This year's work will include the study
of England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales.
Not a few look forward to one of the
most pleasant and pryfitable years in the
history of the organization.
The ladies of the Aid Society of the
Presbyterian church will meet at the
home of Mrs. Anderson at 2:30 o'clock
Wednesday afternoon.
Mrs. W. H. Bohnencamp deligtfully
entertained a large number cf ladies on
Saturday evening. The beautiful .-ooms
were profusely decorated in roses and
asters and made a pretty setting for the
party. Five hundred was played and
prizes were given to Mrs. Wm. Ericson,
Mrs. J. M. Berry and Miss Barker. A
luncheon of salad, wafers, cake and coffee
