The county Sunday School convention
which closed last evening was well at
tended and an unusual interest was
manifest through every session. No one
could help but receive an inspiration of
the magnitude and responsibility of the
work the Sunday school is capable of
doing. The effect on the schools of this
county at a result of this convention wil
certainly be noticeable.

The relay races at the fair will be one
of the drawing cards. Every body likes
to see a relay race.
The county fair open next Tuesday
and it is to be hoped that our present
good weather will continu throughout
next week.
There art a number of individual
pumping plants on the Grand Ronde
river and more are being added each
year. Some us electricity, other gasoline.
We are getting almost enough auto
mobiles in this country to effect a perm
anent organization for a "good roads
movement." The bicycle when in th
highth of its popularity was a great
factor in aggitating and creating senti
ment for good roads and the automobile
will likewise.
There are not a few residents of this
state who inwardly wish that the decision
of the arbitration board of which Francis
J. Heney, the land fraud prosecutor, is a
member, may so please the United
Railaoads. that they might offer him such
a princely salary that all future land
fraud cases would have no attraction for
him at all.
Straw days are common at this time
of the year in Washington. Whole neigh
borhoods turn out and spread straw on
the county roads to lay the dust. This
policy has been followed for years in
some localities to the great advantage of
the public generally. Compared to that
section, the Grande Ronde Valley has no
conception of what a really dusty road
means.

Secretary Taft begins to realize that

There it too much American money in
