Every youth who is taught to observe the principles of justice and forbearance becomes an intelligent friend of the doc trine of peace; and every endeavor which ai ms at such instruction is deserving of the highest commendation. President McKinley. Everybody will take a crack at the President for inaugurating reform in The time is rapidly approaching when it will rain, and the ground will be well moistened, and roots therein will revive and prepare to send forth new growths, and none of these more cheerfully or suc cessfully than those of the burdocks and thistles and other weeds, the tops of which, we regret to say, are for the most part uncut in time to prevent the seed from maturing and falling. Yet a good deal could be done- in the few days remaining before the fall rains set in to clear lots of these disagreeable and in jurious weeds and to prevent their seed from becoming distributed, rooted, and bearing other like crops. The subject is tiresome, we suspect, but we cannot forbear making this, final ap peal to owners of vacant grounds to clean them of weeds, and to the city officials to enforce the law to a far greater extent than has been done. Oregon Journal. If property owners will do a little figur ing they will find that cement walks are cheaper in the long run. The board walks have to be renewed often, while cement pioperly laid will last a life time with a little patching. In the most progressive cities cement walk is laid almost exclus ively of late years, and in addition to dur ability they are neater in appearance and very much cleaner.
