Cotner and daughter Maud, left this morning for Pomeroy where they will visit friends and relatives a few weeks. Mr. and Mrs. D. H. Steward left Sat urday evening for Portland. Before re turning Mr. Steward will visit her sister at Central Point in Jackson county. Rev. B. F.Meredith leaves in the morn ing to attend the annual conference which meets this year at Idaho Falls. As the church at its official meetiig unanimously requested that he be returned, it is gen erally expected that the Bishop will grant their request. John Marony alias numerous riames but best known all over the coast as "Box Car Casey" struck La Grande again and again proceeded to fill up on fire water and is now sleeping off the effects of his indiscretion in the city bastile. He must like the company of bedbugs as he has been there before. ON AN EXTEHDED TRIP C. B. Simmons leaves tonight on an ex tended business trip to Denver, Kansas City, Chicago ind Omaha. He will inci dentally visithis birthplace, Kenosha, Wis. for a day or two, and altogether will be away about two weeks. Andres Nelson, the Observer circula tion manager, left this morning for a week' outing in the Wallowa valley. Wm. AUinson left this morning for Bak er City to place orders for the products of the La Grande flouring mill. Mrs. H. S. Massee returned Jast even ing from Kamela where she has been for several weeks. She is much improved in health. Mrs. Carrie Duryeaand df ughter Juan ita. left last evening for Seattle where they will be the guests of Mrs. George Burd for the next two weeks. Vincent Reeves, who has been suffering with a severe case of blood poisoning, is much better today, and has so far re covered a to be able to be out upon the street t Conducior J. C. F raker is building a substantial barn on hi farm just south of the city. Mr. and Mrs. Frakerhave made a beauti ful home out of the place that remained unoccupied for so long. W. G. Sawyer, manager of the Pierce Sawyer Dairy, was a La Grande visitor today. Mr. Sawyer states that though he has nearly one hundred cow in hi herd, he is itill in the market for more first class dairy stock. Mr. and Mr. B. P. Burnett of Starkey were in the city Saturday and Sunday, returning home this morning. Mr. and Mr. Burnett hrve been resident of Star key for the past twenty-one years, and feel that there is no better place on the coast in which to make a home. Mr. Thoma tleming returned Sunday morning from an extended visit to her former home in Iowa, after many year absence. She naturally had a delightful time renewing old acquaintances but is glad to once more be at home in the beautiful Grande Ronde. C. W. Jarrett, who was riding on top of one f the coaches on passenger train No. 2 last evening fell from the carat Kamela and sustained a very seuere contusion at the back of the head and also several bruises on his back. He was brought to this city and placed under the care of Dr. A. L.Richardson, who dressed the wounds, and the man will soon be able to resume his travels. A party of young people. Misses Frances Massee. Gertrude Ralson, and Eva Niell, witu. Mr. L F. Massee, were at Kamela ye:terday and on boarding the train for La Grande at that place, Miss Niell, while passing from one car to another, caught her foot between the foot plates of the two vest.bules. Fortunately the pace between the two cars was not diminished and her foot was removed after a severe sprain. Railroad men stated last night that they had never heard of a similar accident. Admiral Vest, the man of Magestic Range fams, is in the city this week and is meeting old friends and singing songs of praise regarding the virtues of the Maj estic. The Admiral has made this terri tory before and is well known to the citizens of this city and county. Getting acquainted is one of the many happy accomplish ments which are his. If you have not had the pleasure of meeting the Admiral call at Mrs. T. N. Murphy's store and ask for him and he will do the rest. He is not hard to approach. The price paid for the last wood was $375. Water Superintendent Gilliham states that he expects to save $5 per day by using coal. COMMENCED THIS MORNING Jack Childs with a crew of men com menced work this morning moving the Baptist church to the property of John Wilson, the purchaser, near the hill on sixth street. Rev. Gibson the pastor ex pects :o commence excavating for the new church just as soon a the building i removed. It will be up-to-date in every particular, to be constructed of brick and stone, the estinuted cost of which will be about $8,000. A special train will leave Portland and pickup delegates at all intermediate points. Wm. Miller president of the Commer cial Club will be pleased to appoint any one as a delegate who will attend. Special rates will be given and there should be quite a number attend from this valley and city. Union county is just . beginning to become awakned to the advantages of irragation and all who have given the subject consideration readily admit that irrigation has more in store towardi the development of this valley than any one thing that could be possibly be brought about.
