Ben Hopper of Baker City is in the City visiting relatives. He was called here by the death of the Synhorst child. L. P. Day who had the misfortune to break his leg 'about a month ago, is able to be out on crutches. Dr. and Mrs. R. J. Ruckman formerly of this place but now of Milton was in the city this morning. They went to Baker City where they will visit friends. Antorney Tom Crawford returned this morning from Portland where he has been the past three days. Mrs. Crawford returned with him. Jessie H. Thomas of La Grande is a visitor in Baker looking after business interest and calling on friends today. Baker City Herald. Her position at the La Grande Investment Company was filled by Miss Irma Aikine during her absence. Jack Childs, the house mover, expects to start Monday on the work of moving the old Baptist church. John Wilson, who has purchased the building, will remove it to his property on O. Street. There will be a meeting of the Baptist Young Peoples Union at the South Meth odist church on Sunday evening al 6:30. A full attendance is desired as business of importance is to come before the meet ing. The Baptist church congregation will worship r.ext Sunday in the South Meth odist church on 3d Street and Jefferson Avenue. Sunday school at 9:45 a. m.. and preaching by Pastor W. H. Walter Baker, a Mutual Life mis sionary, who was formely located in Baker, but is now making hisheadquaters at La Grande, visited in Baker yesterday and left last evening for Boise to confer with the district manager. Mrs. Baker remained in La Grande.- Baker City Herald Rail Ellridge. retjrned this morning from Portland where he has been the past ten days. During that time he spent three days at the Beach and reports that he found all of La Grande's people who are there enjoying themselves immens ly. The hammer does not strike the bell with sufficient force or else it does not strike it at the right place. At any rate, one has to be within a block of the tower to hear the bell at all when it is ringing and even then the bell does not have the tone it should have. Contracts Goodnough has experimented with it for several days by raising and lowering the apparatus but if there is any paticnlar position that the hammer must be placed in, it has not yet been found. Chief Jones is hurrying the work of redistricting the city into suitable precincts, so that when the alarm system is completed, he will be ready to publish his code. A GOOD THING. J. W. WALLOWA'S NEW COURT HOUSE Peter Bosquet recently returned from Enterprise reports that he has completed the construction of the Wallowa county's new court house.
