syndicate composed of eastern and Cali
fornia capitalists.
Approximately 500.000 acres are in
cluded in the sale and the consideration
involved is about $750,000.
fhe principal purchasers of this great
tract are the Hunter Land company of
Minneapolis, Minn., and Richard Skyes, a
capitalist of Santa Barbara, Cat. Asso
ciated with them are the W. B. S. Trim
ble company of Jamestown, N. D., and
Andrew. E. Johnson, vice president of the
Hunter Land Company, and President A.
E. Johnson of the Land and Steamship
The tract sold is a strip of land running
from the Cascade forest reserve to the
Oregon-Idaho boundary, a distance of ap

Colonel W. F. Butcher, one of the few
stand-pat democratic war horses of Ore
gon, left last night on No. 2 for New York
for the purpose of meeting William Jen
nings Bryan, the local nominee of the
democratic party for president two years
hence, who is returning from a tour around
the world. Colonel Butcher is just as
enthusiastic today as he was in 1896 on
the money question, and believes that Bry
an will stand pat on the question of the
free coinage of silver. Some other demo
crats are not so sure that Bryan ought to
say anything about free silver. Colonel
Butcher siys that the entire question has
been misrepresented and thoroughly mis
understood. The Colonel is a personal friend
of Bryan's and will meet at his home in
Lincoln, Neb. after the New York demon
stration. Baker City Democrat.
