Hughes of the insurance investigation will be nominated by repub licans for Govenor of New Yoi k. Odell's friends announced today that the ex- governor favors Hughes. It has been initimatei that President Roosevelt has been notified of the plan and that he favors Hughes. A plan to elimnate Higgms is on foot by the cement factions. Odell's frierds say that if the scheme carries Odell will gladly retire from politics. Aug. 15 Five policemen were killed and two more were badly hurt to day by terrorists. , (Si-rlpps News Association) El Paso, Tex.. August 16.- By the ex plosion of an entire carload of dynamiteat four o'clock yesterday at the Santa Eula lia mine, twelve miles ftom Chihuhuma Mexico, twelve people are killed outright and two score so seriously injured that they may die. The dead are frightfully mangled. A warehouse and dwelling near the car were demolished and almost every window of the entire camp was broken. Two Americans, whose names are unknown, are among the dead. The causa of the explosion is unknown, but the finding of the corpse of a boy with a small rifle among the dead is believed to be the clew to the cause. It is thought he fired into the car causing the contents to explode. Mrs. Lillian Harris is in the city today from Cove. Mr. ar.d Mrs. J. B. Serbert, of Enter prise are visiting friends in the city today. Dan Sommer of Elgin was a caller in the city thjs morning enroute to his home. Mrs. S. Burnett and daughter are vis iting friends in Baker City. John Dailey of Hilgard visited in the city last evening. The members of the city council last night recieved cigars on F. L. Meyers. Mrs. Mary Scott, was a passenger on this mornings train for points in Idaho. G. W. Benson is transacting business here from Union. Mrs. Wm. Grant and children returned last night from Portland where they have been visiting for some time. Harrison French of La Grande, for merly of Baker, is visiting in the city the guest of friends. Baker City Herald Mrs. Ida Giilis of Athena is visiting friends in this city. She arrived this cruir.g. Elmer Christianson and Editor Terry Tuttle of the Elgin Recorder, returned this morning after a business visit in this city. W. L Watts, returned from Hidaway Springs where he has been for several weeks. Mi. Watts says there are so many people at the springs that every thing it crowded. There will be of a meeting of the B. Y. T U. at South Medhodist Church on Sunday evening at 6:30 full attendance is desired as business of importance is to come before the meeting. N, E. Imhause of Baker City arrived here yesterday and last evening, he and J. E. Foley and J. M. Ferguson left for Camp Carson where they will arrange for the coming season's work. Mrs. J. Ireland and two daughters left this morning for Kamela where they will spend a few days in camp with Mrs. H.S. Ma'see of this city who is rusticating there. Geo. W. Ames, expects to leave tonight for Pendleton. Mr. Ames is a resident of Comstock, Texas, and is in this part of the world looking for a location. He thinks Wallowa county offers some oportunities for financial gain, and has asked the gov ernment for his share of the fine timber land in that locality. Mrs. J. A. Carlson of Kame'a Editor and Mrs. Bert Huffman of Pendleton passed through the city this morning enroute to Oklahoma where they will visit relatives. They will also visit in Montana. Mr. Huffman is a veteran editor of the Eist Oreganian. Dcctor and Mrs. F. E. Moore are seeing D.triot Michigan from the touring auto of a friend. On a souvenir card to this office they say that everything worth seeing back there is being seen by them. Chicago and then Minneapolis are the cities yet to be visited by Doctor and Mrs. Moore, Lake Minnetonka near Minneapolis will keep them a week. SCOTCH CONCERT COMING R. M. Alexander, diiect from Scotland, and advance agent for the Nannie Strac han Song and Story Entertainment Co.. left the city last evening for Walla Walla. While here he made arrangements to have his entertainment come here about Oct. 1. It consists of Nannie Strachan. soprano, and Gavin Spence, tenor, both natives of Scotland, and judging by the the press comments, they have won high favor in this country. This is a real musi cal treat, as both singer and entertainer are of excellent abilities. Scotch songs and stories of Scotland. Hawaii, New Zealand and Egypt will be told. Andrews of Cleveland, Ohio, who is a wealthy dog fancier. Dan Oak ley is the name inscribed on the registra tion certificate and he is a relative of the famous Don Gladstone. Mr. Andrews has written from Cleveland that Dan has not had experience with other game than quail but feels certain that with proper training he will be a valuable dog. His color is black and white and heedless to say, Al is proud and elated over the setter. STRIKE IN WALLOWA According to reDorts from Eloin rnrlau a crew of twenty men employed on the wailowa extension, went 'n a strike yesterday and the work is now at a stand still. This is of local interest esnseiallii ' as tne local lodges of traimen had planned to hold their picnic on a point on the Wallowa extension. There Still remaina four miles of track to put in place bef re this particular place is reached, and as the work is now delayed, the proposed date of August 26 will have to be postponed. INVESTIGATING LAKE SHORE COMPANY (Scrlpps News Association) Chicago, Aug. 16 Judge Beatha today impanelled a second jury which immedi ately began taking testimony in the alleged violations of the Inter-state commerce laws by the Standard Oil Company and Lake Shore railroad.
