covering rapidly from her recent illness.

arrived in the city last evening and will

The Vergre Tolephone Company has
a force of men building a telephone line
to Medical Springs. In a very thort time
patrons of this line will be able to call up
their friends who reside in that part of
country with as little trouble as they now
call up Summerville.
A. S.Craig arrived from Iowa last eve
ning and this morning went to Summer
viha where he will visit at the homo of his
father P. B. Crag. Mr. Craig will bok
over the prospects for making this his
future home and if the outlook is favor
able he will purchase real estate here.
Dr. 0. E. Howe of Washington DC.
is in La Grande today in the interest of
the pension bureau. There are several
Spanish-American war veterans in and
near La Grande wno are deserving of
pensions and it is Howe's business to pass
judgment on the legality of the applica
tion. Arlo Meyers returned this morning from
Portland, vhere he left his parents visit
ir.g friends. Ha states that after making
a careful study of the Coos Bay region
Mr. Meyers has decided that La Grande
is good enough for him. that he will re
turn satisfied to remain here the rest of
his days. Harry will soon be found, knife
n hand behind the front chair at the o'.d
stand.

SHE APPEARS TO B! IMDCENT
There was a battle in words at the
depot last evening when passenger Numba
2 pulled into station. Miss Lula Linn
employed at the Spokane Cafe for the
past year was about to leave for the
East but Mr. E. F. Johnson proprietor of
the cafe caused her a short delay. About
the time Miss Linn departed Mr. Johnson
noticed the absence of about thirty dollars
worth of table covers and aprons.
Equal to the occasion he secured a
search warrant and with officers Waldron
and McLachlen at his elbow he turned
the contents of Miss Linn's trunks up
side down and inside out in an effort t)
locate his missing linen. During the earch
the lady in question got busy with her
ten-perand hurled p jt namis and epithets
in a way that would put Carrie Nation
in the shade. Meanwhile the search went
on but revealed nothing ot'ier thn the
property of Miss Linn. Wien the fruit
less investigation was over and the trunks
locked her wrath broke out anew and
even after boarding the train she was
heard to call divn vengeance on her
former employer.
Mr. Johnson knows they are gone and
thinks hs knows how they went but is
unable to lay hand3 on them.
