the J. E. Foley residence next Thursday

of being one of the most pleasing and en
tertaining events of the year and one
which should not be ove-Iookea by anyone
who bves an evening filled with music
and merriment. The space will be illum
inated by arc lights and numerous Japan
ese lanter-s. Whi'a home-made ice
cream, pineappie sherbet and cakes are
being served there is to be rendered
throughout the evening a programme
which is mada up out of the best musica
talent of the city.

tend to tne public a hearty invitation to

NO EIRE
It Might have been a fire, but it wasn't.
It was a fire alarm alright enough, and
the department responded, and for the
third successive time Fred Reynolds was
first there with the cart, and for the third
successive time some one had spit on the
spark and extinguished the blaze before
the department had tune to turn on the
water. Fred is beginning to believe he is
a sort of a hoodoo and that so long as he
continues to connect his red wagon to the
hose cart there will never be any real
fires. This time the cause of the distur
bance was a small fire in the rear of J. D
McKennon': residence, which had its in
ception in the ash barrel. There was con
siderable smoke for a few moments, but
no fire worth mentioning.

ACTION SIMPLY POSTPONED
In the report of the recent council
meeting the matter of. allowing a liquor
license to Charles Anderson was referred
to in the Mayor's communication under
the head of unfinished business, with the
notation "License not allowed." The not
ation was somewhat incomplete, as it
conveyed the wrong idea. The intention
of the council in the matter was not to
deny the licence, but simply to postpone
the final action until another meeting.

DRY DOCK DEWEY'S TRIP OVER
Washington, July 20. The dry-dock
Dewey, which went half around the
worid on its voyage to the Philippines, is
now anchored off Rivera ooint. Olongapo
naval station. At this place there is 65
feet of water, so that all vessels which
may be sent into i:' cn ru;i it in
perfect safety. The Dewey will be
anchored with four huge mushroom
anchors at each end, and as the tide
rises only about one foot at Olongapo.

BANK BUILDING BEGINS TO LOOM UP
Up to the present day the work of tear
ing down the old National bank building
has been carried on with dispatch. To
day masons are at work laying stone
upon stone and ere many days the corner
will begin It take on the appearance of a
structure. The iron frame work is arriv
ing and will be ready to put in place as
soon as the foundations are completed.
