From the railroad depot, where train after train ar rives, bringing delegates to the national convention of the Grand Lodge of the Be nevolent and Protective Order of Elks and thousands of other visitors, far beyond the Capitol the royal purple of the order greeta the eye everywhere. Purple bunt ing decorates the businese , houses and private residences,: purple flowers adorn the window sills and bloom in. profusion in every front yard and in every flower bed in the parks and public squares. Pur ple streamers float in the breeze from the housetops and purple light are strung across the streets, to shed purple light upon the festive scene at night. Although the convention will not befcin until this evening, the city is already filled with visitors. Every train rolling into the station brings delegatiods, accompanied by their ladies and other excursionists and many of the delegations are accompanied by bands. According to conservative estimate, there are already about one hundred bands of music in the city and more are coming with every train. The arrangements for the reception of the' delegates arc as nearly perfect as they can be made. Although the totals seem to be crowded already, it is asserted that there will be no difficulty in placing the thousands of delegates and other visitors who are still coming, The business sessions of the Grand Lodge will be held tomorrow and Wednes day. Many matters of importance will come up for consideration, among others a proposition to cut, down the; member ship of the Gra.:d Lodge, which now in cludes all past exalted rulers and is in creasing at the rata of about a thousand a year. A this would soon make the Grand Lodge an enormous and unwield ing body, an effort will be mad tp remedy this altogether too rapid increase. An other propoistion to be considered ! that to make the position of the Exalted Ruler of the Grand Lodge a salaried one and to require that officer to give all his time to the business of the order. This is consid ered necessary on account of the rapid increase in the membership of the order which has reached half a million, distrib vted over 1,026 lodges. The organiza tion is in a flourishing financial condition and has spent mora than $1,000,000 in charity during the past year. ' The election of officers will take place tomorrow and great interest is manifested in that part of the proceedings. The Cal ifornia delegates are wcrking hard for the election of Henry A. Melvin, judge of the superior court of Alameda county to the position of Grand Exalted Ruler, and it is believed that he will' be elected. Following the inclement weather, the Colorado skies appeared undimmed by clouds tnis morr.ing. The Elks will have the most perfect weather for the opening of the convention tonight, It seems al most cerUin that Judge Malvin or Oak land, California, will be 'chosen exalted ruler. Dr. W. H. Haviland of Butte is to be the grand trustee according to reports County Superintendent E. E.'
