Chicago July 9 Secretry James Wilson
visited the ttock yards of this city today
personally and conferred with the rep
resentative packers. The packers sol
, icited the conference -which was short
and lively. Thesecretary would say lit tie

ascertain how many inspecors were need
ed at each house to properly enforce the
provisions of the new law. The packers
refused to comment on thT conference
They are agrieved because Secretary
Wilson critcised them .'or eheir "Grudging
spirit- of economy" before visiting the
plants. The secretary suggested to the
packers a number of improvements.
The conference was apparently onpleas
antto the packers. All who attended
were gloomy at the close. Each carried
a copy of the new federal law, the pro
visions of which it is believed the secre
tary made clear to them.
. After Wilson left, a committee of the
: packers, for purposes not announced, held
a secret meeting.

Sloan was fined ten dollars and costs
and was dismissed very much to the
disappointment of Legrades who had

Seattle, July 9 Judge Meade Emery
who was shot Saturday by his nephew, a
young man named Chester Thompson
died this morning. Deceased leaves a
wife and two small children. It is believed
that Thompson was seeking to kill Miss
Charolotte Wittlesey. with whom he' was
deeply in love, when , he shot his uncle.

mayor, the police were removed and
business was resumed. The management
