of the death of the wife of James Tanner
commanded of the Grand Army of the
Republic, who was killed in an automobile
accident onlast Friday, returned a ver
dict that death .was caused by careless
ness and poor judgment on the part of
the chauffer, in t trying to pass a team

Department is about to get out a new
naval iecruiting lithograph as a means of
advertising the advantages of enlistment
in the navy. Ths" will be a placard,
thirty-six by thirty inches, with five pict
ures of ships, those of the Bonhomme
Richard, the Constitution, the Hartford,
the Olyrnpia, and the Kansas, represent
ing various types of American warships
from the time of the Revolution to the
present day. The pictures are hand
somely colored and the posters are quite
attractive, . : !
MORE EARTHQUAKES

Albuquer N. M. July 5 The in
habiants of Socprry are all in a state of
great excitement on account of a five
distinct earthquake shocks which occured
Monday evening. There was no loss of
life, but nearly every window in the city
was shattered. The people fear other
shocks.
The Fourth of July is the National Holy of Holie, a holiday
devoted to the expression of the physical and the mental exu
berance of patriotic eentiment and faith. It is thus under the
flag rippling with glad laughter in the free air of our America,
and among the joyous faces of the . liberty loving of all ages,

O'Brien, a little girl twelve years of age
while sitting on the railing of a steamer
suffered a terrible accident that proved
fatal. Her legs were caught in tne haw

New York, July 5 Tnaw. the slayer of
White, was arraigned this morning in
order that his counsel r ight withdraw
his plea, if they wished to submit motions.
His counsel made a strong plea for an
early trial, declaring that Thaw was suf
fering from his confinement ir. the tombs
and that if he remained there three
months that he would die. Prosecuting
Attorney Jerome reiterated his statement
that Thaw must take hi. turn with the
other prisoners.
The defense is still making every
effort to find proof that White endeavored
to force his attention upon Mrs, Thaw
So far no legal proof ha. been found.

apolis, on which Thaw's mother was a
passenger, arrived at the Tilbury dock
this morning. The mother had not yet
heard of her son's difficulty. Qaptajn
Gates was informed by wirsless teleg
raphy before landing but was asked not
to inform Mrs. Thaw. The Earl of Yar
mouth, her son-in-law, and iuntf , made
a special request of the reporter not to
tell Mrs. Thaw, who looked ill. Her
daughter will break the news to her.
