In" orr Hue. From recent packing house develop ments, the pure f.od law which was signed by the President today, was opportune. Every section of the ' great state of Oregon is blossoming with prosperity and list. Drive out a few miles for a veri facation of this statement. When a practical farmer like Tali Glenn finds it difficult to distinguish the differ ence between the fall and spring sown grain in the fields, because of the luxur iant growth, it is sure sign cf enormous crops when harvest arrives. Congress is on the eve of adjourning. This congress had done more for the people as a whole, in the passage of leg islation for all of the people than any of its predecessors for many sessions. No little credit is due President Roosevelt for the result, however this is a new age. The grafts that once were winked at. are no longer countenanced, and the "Square deal" idea is permeating the en tire nation, to the end that justice must revail. It comes from authentic souices that work on the enlarged machine shops and new round house will be commenced within the next few days. One of the officials who is in a position to know states that the improvements will be of such a character when completed, it will not be necessary to take engines for re pairs except in occasional instances to Albina. From this time on the rumors that tha "shops are to be moved" will cause little comment. La Grando is on a firmer foundation today than ever for the sure building of a city of not less than 10.000 and that within a very few years. La Grande is growing, right now, and this summer will see the starting point of a renewed activity that will be pennanant The Reverend Charles M. Sheldon, author of "In His Steps," argues a new plan for Topeka and all towns and cities to eelebi ate the Fourth of July. Instead of spending money for fireworks and other useless things, 'he advocates the collection of a fund on that day with which to build a public hall. He said : -This hall could stand on a piece of ground large enough to be made into a children's playground, kept and cared for by the children of the city. Witiin the buildinc itself could be held any gathering 'which centered about the welfare of the city. It could be dedicated to civic, pro gress, to good citizenship rallies, to child ren's Batterings for learning of patriotic songs etc. In other words, it would be a common rallying point, not for enter tainments or amusements, but for the uplifting of the whole city in its moral, physical and esthetic life."
