June 27--The Republi can State Convention of this State was called to order at the City Hall before eleven o'clock this forenoon. The princi pi! business bef ore the convention is the selection of a candidate for Governor, but the convention will be of even great er importance in a national way, by the fact that Speaker Cannon, of the Nation al House of Representatives, will appear before the convention this afternoon and will deliver an address in which he will sound the keynote for the Republican campaign of this year. The number of delegates at this con vention is 1 403 and it will require 705 votes to insure the nomination of a can didate for Governor. PENNSYLVANIA DEMOCRAT CON VENT10N Harrisburg. Pa, June 27 Probably never before in the history of tfc. St:t: has the political situation been more com plicated and uncertain as just now. It is doubtful whether the Democratic State convention, which met here this after it xm. will simplify matters and bring more clean iss in the political situation. Three State tickets have already been named in this State and, if the conven tion, which is now in session here should decide to put up a separate ticket of its own, there will be four and great con fusion in the ranks of both principal parties in the bargain. The Prohibitionists named a ticket on the supposition that the Democrats would endorse it and placed State Treasurer William H. Berry at the head of it. The Lincoln Republicans, the so called reform wing of the party, put up a ticket headed by Lewis Emery, jr. a veteran fighter against the Standard Oil Compan.. The regular, or so called machine Republicans, of whom Senator Penrose is the leadar, have nominated a ticket headed by Edwin S. Stuart, form er Mayor of Philadelphia.. During t.ie last few weeks various ef- foits were made to start a movement in favor of a fusion. The prohibition branch of the Democrats urged the en dorsement of Barry by the regular Demo cratic convention, while the reform ele- . -ent favored the endorsement of tie Lincoln party candidate for governor. It seems, however, that a considerable part of the Democratic party does not favor fusion with any othsr party, but insists upon tha nominatian of a straight Demo cratic ticket. Col. Guffy. the leader of the party in this State made many efforts to restore peace and harmony among tht various factions, with a view of inducing them tj agree up)n a candnU'.a to head the straight Democratic at the coming campaign. His effoits were futile, how ever, and when the convention was called to order this forenoon, the situation was practically uncnanged and the party ap parently as from a compromiso as ever. Former Mayor Vanre MCirmick. of Harrisburg, is strongly pushed for the gubsrra orial nomination and is consider ed one of the strongest candidates whom the Democrats could place at the head of their ticket, but it remains to be seen whether the convention will see fit to bury the hatchet and accept McCormick as compromise candidate. It is considered practically out of the question that eith er Berry or Emery will be end:rsed. Should the Democrats nominate Mc Cormick, State Treasurer Berry will withdraw from the race and will not per mit his name to lead the Prohibitionist's ticket. WISCONSIN DEMOCRATS FOR BRYAN (Scrlpoi News Auoclatlon Milwaukee, Wis, June 27 It has been announced on good authority that the DomocrUic State Convention of Wiscon sin, which opened here this morning, will declare itself for Bryan as the next Democratic presidental candidate. The Wisconsin Democrats are by no means silverites, but they seem to argue that the silver issue is dead and buried and that, aside from that issue. Bryan is a safe man to be at the head of the nation HOOD'S TEXAS BRIGADE'S REUNION (Scrtppa News Association) Somerville, Tex. June 27 The annual reunion of Hood's Texas Brigade opened here today and several thousand visitors from all parts of the Stite are here to take part in the reunion, which will last two days. An interesting program has been prepared for the event and almost every hour will bring some pleasant sur prises and entertaining features. People who are clean inside will look like it and act it.
