Colonel Bryan will deliver a Fourth of July speech in London. La Grande will certainly be well rep reisr.tcd at Ein uu Pioneer day. it looks now as though wc will be there several hundred strong. With a big saw mill, an increased O.'R. & N. payroll; with bumper crops of all kinds, fruit, hay and grain, La Grande ought to move some this year. The Fourth of July celebration will be the sort which will please the old folk as well as the children. The management promises ample drinking water and seats. The boy who saves his money becomes the banker, the merchant, the professional man. The boy who never saves a cent makes the man who earns his bread by the sweat of his brow, who never owns a home or enjoys the luxuries of life. Frank L. Merrick, who so successfully managed the press bureau of the Lewis & Clark Exposition, has taken charge of the publicity of the Alasna- Yukon Pacific Exposition, which will be held at Seattle from June 6 to September 30, 1909. Since 1898 there have been completed for the French navy, thirteen armored cruisers, which may be divided into five types: Three units of 7,700 tons, three of 9,500 tons, five of 10,000 t. ns, one of 11,500 tons, and one of 12,500 tons. In addition to these, there are under con struction three additional cruisers of 12 500 tons, and three of 13,600 tons. James L. Branson, the inventor of the knitting machine which bears his name, was found dead in the stable attached to his residence at Doylestown, Pa., some weeks ago, having been killed in some manner by a horse. His knitting machine was invented during the civil war, and it is said to have yielded him a profit of $60,000 in three months. The farmer, if he only knew it, is a little nearer the Kingdom of Heaven than anyone on earth. He is certain of three square meals a day and is the only man who can fence himself in and live in spite of the rest of mankind. A few cattle and sheep and fowls provide him with iooq and clothing, while his fields yield him flour and a source of revenue. So generous are those provisions and so com mon, that hardly one farmer in ten makes any account of them, although the ordin al y business man thinks he has done well when he reaches the end of the year and finds that he has a little more than made ends meet. It has been said by good men and true that the president revolves in an iron gasket, that he is powerless to act with out the consent of Congress, that he is bound by them, hand and foot. Mr. Roosevelt seems to have disqualified the pen. in other words. "Loosed the Gordon kr,. .v . matter of pride to the poeple that a man is found who can bring them to terms.
