Washington June 23 Bids were open
ed today by the Navy department for the
construction of two first-class battleships,
the Michigan and the South Carolina.
The bids range close to four million each.
Attorney Moody was asked point blank
today if he expects to land J. D. Rocke
feller. He hesitated and answered he did
not think so but would do the best he i
could get traffic managers directly con
cerned. It was not the wish of the ad
ministration to indict clerks and he could
not reach the headt because of a lack of
evidence, -

- New York June 23 A tudden arrival
of a little Miss Hogan created a com
motion at the home of the parents in this
city this mrrning A hurry call brought
Mrs. McEwan whose specialty is the re
ception of tiny visitors and hurried to
Bellevue hospital with the little infant .in
an incubator. The little one's life will
perhaps be saved, but the doctors say
that little Miss Hogan awakened several
months to soon. It only weighs three
quarters of a pound but is perfectly nor
mal and will likely thrive as it appears
satisfied with the little glass oven in
which it is kept at the apartments.

and organizations belonging to the German
-American Alliance are assembled here
to take part in the great State convention
of the Alliance which opened here today

a grand festival at Rose Grove on the

mail order concern which is to be con
verted into a forty million stock company
soon to be financed. Levy Mayor of Chic
ago reprenented tha Chicago house in its
legal negotiations. Sears Roebnck St Co.
will sell to the banking syndicate headed
by Goldman, Sachs & Co., and Lehman
Brothers $10,000,000 of 7 per cent
perferred stock. The $40,003,000
common stock will be hald by the present

New York, June 23 A movement is on
f.ot in this city to build a school of
nne arts, under government control, on
tie line of famous Ecole des Beaux Arts
in Paris. It is estimated that at Im
5,000,000 will be needed for sit, build
ing and endorsment. The movement is
distinct from the plan of the ways and
mens committee of the Fine Arts Fed
eration, of which John W. Alexander is
chairman, to raiss at least $3,000,000
for a United Fin Arts Buildinir. It U
expected that Andrew Carnegie, J. Pier-
pont morgan and several other art patrons
in this city would contribute
toward tha endowment of the proposed
school. Most of the artists in this coun
try are in favor of the plan and it is be
lieved that the proposition will
general support among the art-loving
people of the United States. The school

fifteen boats were lined up on the start
ing lins to compete in the New York
Yacht Club's 101 -milerace to Block Island
The race being limited to boats of 81
feet water line or under, some of the
larger boats were excluding from the pri
vilege of participating in the event.

has given a third priz and the athletis
